Arizona to allow concealed weapons without permit

She signed the bill on Friday and my CCW permit arrived in the mail on Saturday. It took less than a week for DPS to issue the permit! Our CCW class only had 6 people in it. The instructor said last year they were doing about 50 people per class! I suspect the number of CCW permits issued will plummet.

I'm personally very in favor of this new law even though I hate that we had to get a law passed so we could exercise our rights. If I didn't already have my CCW permit I would still take the class and get the permit. It's a personal decision but I believe you should educate yourself as much as possible. Lots of folks say the CCW class is a waste of time but I got a lot of good info out of it. And no, I am not nor do I know anyone involved in the CCW training business.

I agree 100% Roka! I hope every one who is going to TRY carrying a gun down here is at least responsible enough to educate themselves! I have been around guns for a long time and i wouldn't dare take mine out in public unless i knew all i could about it and how to use it properly! Lets just hope we dont get a bunch or Morons out there trying to act cool... or there will be alot of accidents. *COUGH* like in Wal-Mart *COUGH*

The shooter at WalMart in Surprise was somebody who was carrying openly, which has been recognized as a right since 1912. He also violated the law well before he discharged that firearm negligently, nothing accidental about it, and he should have been detained far earlier.
If one moron carrying open has such media coverage over an incident that thankfully caused no death or injury, then maybe AZ carriers tend not to cause this type of commotion, or it would be treated as far more commonplace. Our accidental injury rate with firearms is very low, with no training required for 98 years of lawful open carry.
I think the law will make very little differance in any accident rate, same as the streets never ran red with blood after CCW was passed.

WOW! Happy to hear this. Wish we had your governor.

To those who say "great but we should require training still", how is that any different than just saying we should require carry permits?

Get rid of all the extra fees... taxing rights is wrong. This is great! :D

Hooray for AZ. What doesn't make much sense to me is that you're still required to take a class in order to get a permit, should you choose to get one. Seems to me that a 2 minute explanation of the difference/benefit would suffice.

One purpose of the permit is reciprocity with other states.

Most states require some sort of class. Without the class, those states would likely cease to recognize AZ's permit.

Georgia recognizes AZ permits and we don't have a test or class requirements to get a GFL; don't know how many others that have reciprocity with AZ do.

Most of them have some requirement, though the ease of meeting it varies. Idaho will accept Hunter Safety, match shooting experience, etc. in lieu of the class. But there is a requirement.

Now comes my dilemma... who do I vote for for Governor?

Jan Brewer signed the bill and she's proven to be a true patriot.

Buzz Mills once owned and ran Gunsite; he's running, too.

Decisions, decisions...

Even with the new law, AZ will still issue CCW permits.

Benefits for still having an AZ CCW permit...
1. Being able to conceal carry in states that honor/have reciprocity with AZ.
2. Being able to legally carry conceal in establishments that serve alcohol for consumption (resturants/bars).
3. Exempted from NICS/NICS fees, when transfering firearms from an AZ FFL dealer.
4. Being able to legally carry conceal in gun free school zones.

I havent personally verified these yet but this is basically what Ive heard on the news.... for whats its worth.

When I move back to AZ I will renew my permit just for the NICS benefit. I ALWAYS come back delayed so it saves me the hassle of having to wait. That was a big secondary reason for me getting my CCW. I had no problem open carrying. I really don't want to go the VAF route because I do not want the FBI/ATF to know how many toys are in the closet.

I'll still get and need a permit. Great law, just didn't go far enough.
