For those of us who simply can't make it to that meeting, or don't live in Phx, what can we do and who should we contact? Just email the AG and Governor's office?

If you can make it to the State Capital sometime before the hearing you can register at a kiosk to get a login/password for remote access. You can then support any bill you want from home by submitting a letter on-line to be read during the hearing. Also contact your legislators to request that they support the bill. Thanks. :)

There was a lot of support in favor of the bill at the hearing today. I estimate that proponents outnumbered opponents at about 2 to 1. Most of the opponents were chief's of police representing the viewpoint of the school leadership of the universities they work for. There were also a couple of representatives from an anti-gun group in Arizona named Arizonans for Gun Safety or something like that. All of the opponents used emotional arguments of "what if" scenarios. When asked if they could share any examples of their what if scenarios they were dumbfounded - could not list a single example.

The proponents on the other hand had statistics, actual examples of shootings stopped by armed citizens, etc. They presented themselves very well. Hopefully it will pass and we can be one step closer to getting rid of so-called "gun free zones" that are nothing more than victim disarmament zones. An experiment that uses our children as the mice - plenty of which have already died as testimony to the fact that gun free zones do nothing more than create a victim rich zone.

You may consider joining the Arizona Citizen's Defense League, if you haven't already. Bills like this don't come out of thin air. There are some very smart cookies (not me) at the local level--not the national level--that are making this stuff happen. They can use your support.

There is an alerts mailing list (you don't have to be a member of AZCDL to get these alerts) that will send you alerts of bills that are before committees and coming up for votes. When you get the mailing list alerts, you will know which legislators need to be called or written to or emailed. Those letters (or emails or calls) make a huge difference.

For anyone interested you can watch the archived video of the hearing here. The first 10 minutes are for another bill. The SB 1214 hearing begins at roughly the 10 min:24 sec mark. Initially you'll hear an overview of what the bill does as well as thoughts from AZ Senator Karen Johnson. The testimonials from those against the bill begin @ about the 0hr:14min:30sec mark. They were not asked to avoid repetition so you'll find that each testimonial basically covers the same points over & over. You can sum up their talking points with the following:

1) more guns = more bad, more accidents, more death
2) Police will be too confused if there is more than one person with a gun at the scene (a bad guy or gal & one or more good guys or gals)
3) citizens with guns will use their guns to kill in situations that without guns would have ended in nothing more than a heated argument, yelling, or perhaps a severe physical beating.

When asked, none of them were able to cite specific events where the above took place. They simply went on about imaginary "what if" scenarios with zero evidence to support their arguments based on nothing more than their own fear of guns.

The testimonies of those in favor of the bill began @ 1hr:05min:12sec. Due to time constraints & the fact that there were so many there to speak in favor of the bill, those in favor were asked to only bring up items that had not yet been discussed by other proponents. Even with that constraint, we managed to speak in favor of the bill for roughly 1 hr & 19 min's until the 2hr:24min:30sec mark which is when they list people who have submitted their stance against the bill online but did not sign up to speak. At 2:27:50 they begin the list of those in favor of the bill that did not speak. At 2:29:00 they moved on to SB 1408.

Eagle:

What's the next phase here? Is it being referred to the floor for a vote? How can I help my critters decide in our favor at this point?

It is going to be in committee again on Monday Feb 25th. They did not vote this week because of lack of time (so many people showed up to speak against & for the bill that most of the entire hearing time was devoted to hearing testimony), and the fact that one Senator was absent who might vote in favor of sending the legislation to the Senate floor with a recommendation for implementation (and that vote would be key to doing so). If you can make it to either the Senate or the House sometime this week or next Monday morning, you can register & set up an Arizona RTS (Request to Speak) account. With that you can search for the upcoming hearing by bill # & officially add your name as a supporter of the legislation which will be read during the hearing as a supporter. You can also submit a letter of support at the same time that would be read during the hearing.

Also be sure to contact your AZ Senator & House Representative to request that they fully support the bill.
