I was talking to my father's step dad during Thanksgiving, when he told me what happened to his brother two weeks ago. While I have never met the man, my (step-grandad??) is a straight shooter, rarely even joking about anything, and told the story to us as it had been related to him. I would like to share this with all of you.
Apparently, his brother(70) was sleeping in his bed, when at one thirty in the morning was awoken by a knock. The knock also woke his son(45) up who was sleeping on the couch in the livingroom. His dad, opening the door, found a gun pointed at his head. Quickly three men entered the house and demanded money from him. The son, who had remained in the living room, got a shotgun that was kept in a case.
This is where the story gets interesting. The son apprently walks out and points the shotgun at BG 1, telling them to get out. BG points the gun at his dads head, and tells the son to drop the shotgun. The son complies. The BGs force them to open the safe, from which they took 35,000 dollars in cash. They tied them up and left. Apparently (as my 70 year old step-gd put it) his brother is a "jesus freak" and doesnt believe in defending himself. Thus his home has been invaded 7 times.
Personally, I feel that it's the same people each time. There are countless things that went wrong here, and I'm sure that many of us would have handled it differently and hopefully better. The one thing thing that really is eating at me though was the gact that the son dropped the shotgun when told to by the bg. I could go either way with that one. On one hand, you are giving up your only protection. On the other hand, they have a gun on a loved one. That's a call I pray I never have to make.

Whether it's the same people or not, you'd think he'd get the point. Given his age, I am betting he has, and he has made conscious decision to follow his ideology.... can't really blame him for that either...

"BG points the gun at his dads head"

The moment the BG moved his gun is when he should have shot him.

I'm a Jesus Freak, too, BTW.

Why did your step father's brother open the door to strangers at 130 AM ?

If you take that shotgun, be ready to use it.. there is no point to point it and than drop it because you caused the bad guy to point your fathers head.

Being a Christian I would have had the shotgun on the BG with the pistol to my Dad's head. If my Dad's hurt in any way, BuB Bye BG. If any of them moved the BG with the gun would get it first with the rest getting their just deserts if they choose to tempt fate. Where do they live that it's that bad they have to live there? With that kind of money stolen (especially if it's large sums of money like this) they can move to a better place! Get an alarm system, plan how to approach situations like this. And after 7 times before, God does talk to you, just have to listen, and HE said it after the 2nd time robbed, MOVE! Especially if your a christian for you might just kill someone even though the BG is wrong. Christian does not mean you walk on water or better than anyone else, just forgiven.

Not to be mean but could the son be in on this and getting a cut of the booty later?

1:30 at the morning this ole Rednecked Baptist Preacher is going to shoot the BG on site no questions asked.

Let God show mercy and Jesus give Grace but I shall show none to those breaking in at my home.

Why would anyone open the door to a stranger in the middle of the night? He should have let the shotgun do the talking once they entered the home.

Well.... I was going to comment but looks like everyone already covered it. This "Jesus Freak" prolly would have pulled the trigger. -wingnut13

Whaaaa?

That's a tough call. "Frustrated" doesn't even cut it, I bet.

I find it VERY strange that after 6 home invasions, they still keep $35,000 :what: in cash in their safe, and just open the door without confirming identity & intentions. After ONE invasion, you'd think security would get TIGHT. Even pacifists can do things to maintain decent security.

:banghead:

$35,000 in a safe at home?

Answer the door at 1:30AM without first eyeballing through the view port or a window?

The BG’s have guns displayed and the son merely orders them out, he doesn’t blast?

This one house has a history of being invaded but precautions are non-existent?

?

If I had that shotgun, I wouldn't even tell them to get out. I'd just start shooting.

Of course, around where i live, if the neighbors here gun shots, they are gonna come over, guns blazing, in a hurry... :) I love Kentucky!

With that money, they can't install a peephole??? or a motion detector light? or a camera?

And oh, by the way, if the guy is your step-dad's brother, he is your step-uncle, not step-granddad. You know? --- your father's brother is your uncle...get my grip?

from OP (post #1)

Come on - 7th time? $35m in the safe? Answers the door at 1:30 AM w/o looking and with no caution? The older gent gets to the door from his BR 1st before a guy on the couch , who's probably closer? Something is wrong here.

As everyone has already said, there are way too many strange things going on in this story. Sometimes ya just gotta say, "If it sounds too strange to be true... " This is a third hand story and sometimes things just get twisted - whether on purpose or not.

Okay, fine. Does he not believe in banks? He's been robbed 7 times and has $35g's in cash in the house? Unless he's a drug dealer, ***?

Call me crazy but, I ain't opening my front door after dark to anyone who isn't a) invited or b) wearing a badge and holding a warrant. Even then I'm going to be armed with a pistol.

This is a comedy of tactical errors that, thankfully, nobody got butchered in.

Opening the door at 1:30 in the morning to strangers .... jeeze

I don't care how much of a pacifist you are, Jesus doesn't require you open the door at 1:30 in the morning (Revelation 3:20 notwithstanding).

This story is an example of Darwin at work. Anyone who refuses to defend themselves...or keep repeating the same old mistake....... like opening the door to strangers in the middle of the night...... is just outright foolish.

And the fact that he is said to be a Christian gives Christians a bad rep. Christians are commanded to use "wisdom" and this guy did not. It is the duty of every able bodied man (especially a Christian) to have the means and the WILL to defend their love ones.

I don't buy the Hollywood stereotype of Jesus...you know, the wimpy guy with the beard. The real Jesus was a man's man. Tough and strong. And so should his followers be. (Ok...I went off on a tangent...sorry. This is one of my pet peeves.)

I have to agree with most of the above. This has nothing to do with being christian or otherwise. A coward is a coward. If you want to use your religion as an excuse it just makes the other members of said religion look bad.

I know I had responded early in this but to give you an example of how I answered the door one nite. Local paper said 2-3 guys at nite would knock on the door of the house & force their way in banishing a gun. Tie the person up & get the goods & run. I heard knocking about 2:30 AM. I looked down the stairs to see flashlites zooming around outside my front door. No question I got my S&W 360 357 mag and went down stairs to check. Could not see thru the narrow glazed side windows. I placed the muzzle of the gun against the door about chest high to the outsider. I slowly opened the door to find 2 cops checking on a call about a woman screaming around my area (houses with 1-7 acres each). It ended up the woman started screaming at a house across the street and the cops took off. BUT if it were those BGs, I would of started with one down and only one to contend with. But like I said about being a christian, it does not mean you just take it or lay down & die while the BGs take advantage of your wife, daughter or house! God will forgive you for defending the good, they are called Christian Warriors.

My ancestors didn't make it to the top of the food chain by rolling over and wetting themselves when trouble came knocking at the cave door.

This story does smell funny.
