I was talking to my father's step dad during Thanksgiving, when he told me what happened to his brother two weeks ago. While I have never met the man, my (step-grandad??) is a straight shooter, rarely even joking about anything, and told the story to us as it had been related to him. I would like to share this with all of you.
Apparently, his brother(70) was sleeping in his bed, when at one thirty in the morning was awoken by a knock. The knock also woke his son(45) up who was sleeping on the couch in the livingroom. His dad, opening the door, found a gun pointed at his head. Quickly three men entered the house and demanded money from him. The son, who had remained in the living room, got a shotgun that was kept in a case.
This is where the story gets interesting. The son apprently walks out and points the shotgun at BG 1, telling them to get out. BG points the gun at his dads head, and tells the son to drop the shotgun. The son complies. The BGs force them to open the safe, from which they took 35,000 dollars in cash. They tied them up and left. Apparently (as my 70 year old step-gd put it) his brother is a "jesus freak" and doesnt believe in defending himself. Thus his home has been invaded 7 times.
Personally, I feel that it's the same people each time. There are countless things that went wrong here, and I'm sure that many of us would have handled it differently and hopefully better. The one thing thing that really is eating at me though was the gact that the son dropped the shotgun when told to by the bg. I could go either way with that one. On one hand, you are giving up your only protection. On the other hand, they have a gun on a loved one. That's a call I pray I never have to make.
