Asked if I had a gun on me.

i think the guy is just one of those people who is scared/awed by guns, and somehow feels "safer" if he "knows" he's in the presence of one. which is stupid, really. he's not accomplishing anything by asking if you have a gun. if you walked in there to rob the store or kill someone, you're not going to answer yes even if you do have a gun; and if you have a legit ccw permit, he should be thrilled that someone with a gun is in the store in case it DOES get robbed or shot up. it all goes back to the way people are taught nowadays that it is dangerous simply to be in the same room as a gun.

I can't imagine anyone asking someone if their fanny pack had a gun in it or not. Most likely, I would say that it was none of their business. I used fanny packs for years in NO ccw states and when I traveled in many states back east. I had NO gun in it - I obeyed the stupid/wrong 'laws'. UGH. I had the fanny pack on me because I wanted to be safer if I was alone, had a purse or briefcase in my hand but my wallet, checkbook, chap stick, comb, hankie and spare eyeglasses were in the fanny pack. The KEYS were in my hand and/or in my pocket or fanny pack if I needed my hands to be free. I walked to and from my vehicle with my KEYS in my hand - the pointy end out. If someone tried to rob me or I had to fly on an airplane... I had my IMPORTANT/GOOD stuff on me and the other purse and/or briefcase had my other STUFF needed for the trip. I usually omit a purse and use a briefcase. Sometimes I put a small purse INSIDE of the briefcase if I will need one for a 'dress up event'. Leave the briefcase at the hotel or visiting home and use the evening purse or smaller purse for the non business event.

I do LIKE the idea of a fanny pack and having your gun on you - with you. I prefer an open carry HOLSTER style but if you live in a no OC STATE... it is a great idea to me especially for some of us.

I open carry.

Sometimes I carry in a fanny pack/use it as a purse - over the shoulder (NOT a great idea to many as those gun purses.) or as a 'fanny pack - traditional carry' in the woods along with carrying another gun on me or a rifle which I do not carry THAT often. We usually have a rifle or two along with our other guns when we travel though. MT law is different for a purse too.

My husband carries concealed and open. I would like to get him a 'fanny pack' even though he has ALL kinds of holsters and rifle slings. He has one but it is more of a grab/go bag set up deal. I do not know if he would even use one anymore. I think that in some cases especially for travel for women and men... it makes sense.

Spring Mom, I have had grocery bag boys/girls say that to me about targets when I lived back east. In one car - I had a real trunk. In the truck - I had an extended cab. I could not CCW or have a loaded gun back in that 'state' but it could be apart - you know what I mean. I used to keep ALL of my targets from my indoor and outdoor ranges too. I used to write the dates on them, how many feet away I shot or my distance, what gun I used, what ammunition I used, etc. I had so many targets!!! I was proud of my targets! I used my perp paper targets aka silhouette ones more back east. When my friends came to visit I showed them my targets and progress. My late husband used to get a kick out of it too. Proud of me even though I am NO expert or great FAR away shooter aka rifleman.

Take care,

Catherine

Just tell 'em that's where you keep all your dungeons and dragons gear in case a game breaks out. Then the person will quickly drop the subject. Unless they are a nerd (sorry D&D players) at which point you consider fleeing to avoid ensuing conversation.

I think fanny packs are fine if you are involved in an activity where fanny packs are commonplace. Jogging and biking come to mind. Tourists in beach towns use them a lot too.

Most of the people who associate fanny packs with guns are gunnies or cops. The general public is pretty clueless.

I am still not a fan of fanny packs because they CAN raise the question (as the OP found out) and because gun access can be awkward and slow compared with IWB carry.

obligatory brit laughing fanny pack bwhahahahahha

My ex-wife told a pair of mutual friends (who are from Britain) that I got my CHL. Next time i saw her, she asked me about it, how I carry, etc. I told her a lot of people carry in a fanny.

She replied, "How horribly uncomfortable that must be."

I am a nerd, and I support this post.

This thread has a bunch of really snide responses and there is a time for them, but also consider giving an honest answer. Are you going to see this guy again? We need as many pro-carry people as we can get, never underestimate the value of letting the public know that normal people carry concealed weapons. It isn't something just gun nuts do, its something the average guy and his wife out buying furniture do too. Consider saying "yeah I do. You have one to protect you and your family when you're out too don't you? You can't be too safe!"

Actually, I keep my dice in a little pouch that can clip to my backpack or to my belt. :p The pouch would also be the perfect size to carry a Bersa .380 or PPK. But which is in there? You never know....

Maybe he figured, correctly, that it was a CCW technique, was just curious about concealed carry in general, and didn't know how else to approach the question.

"Are you curious about concealed carry?" might have worked, without going into the actual pack or rebuffing him.

Just my take on it.

But, then again, I'm sorta known as "Johnny Concealedcarryseed."

Tell them that is where you keep your Amway membership applications and thank him for the opportunity to tell him the good news about the Amway corp.

LOL. That is the best response on here. You got a good laugh out of me on that one, BluesBrother!

He'll never buy it, they train the Amway ( now Quickstar) people never to say Amway until they have you at a meeting

No, the pack contains my antipsychotic meds. I need to carry them because strangers asking me dumb questions may trigger an episode.

Just tell him "nah, the gun is holstered on my hip, the fanny pack is for all my medications that keep me balanced".

I went into a bar in Texas once, with a Buck knife on my belt. The guy at the door told me I had to put the knife back in my car, so I did. As I walked by him again, and he thanked me, I said "no problem, but I'm keeping the gun", and kept on walking. He sure had a bewildered look on his face. No, I didn't have a gun on me, but I couldn't resist.

I think the Brits have some great slang. Fanny packs and what you put in them, just keep them in stitches.

With respect to this thread--
Folks in Chicago were trying to get lots of people to wear "tummy" packs to an outdoor gathering. Just trying to make the cops crazy with a ton of folks walking around, potentially with concealed weapons.

Don't recall what came of it.

Geez, you are much nicer than I am in general. You even opened it and showed him the contents of your fanny pack? I most likely would have told the guy to mind his biznass.

I actually got patted down once, there had been a robbery and the security guard thought he was doing his job, since he patted down the customer in front of me, I simply palmed my NAA mini and he never even saw it.Once he cleared me, I slipped it back into my pocket, and went about my business.BTW it was my bank located in a supermarket. When I regularly carried my P-11, I always thought someone would spot it, but they never ...
