In Western Australia, to obtain a pistol legally via a shooting club takes about 9 to 12 months. You can never carry it for self-defence. When not at the range, it must be locked away in a full-on safe, unloaded, with the ammo stored in a separate locked compartment or another safe.
So that stops gun crime, right? Yep, like this -- the attacker had a 9mm semi-auto with laser sight ---- illegally of course.
And what did the victims have for self-defence? You guessed it. Sweet Fanny Adams.
If ever there was a case for allowing people CCW, this type of event exemplifies it.

A PERTH (Western Australia) teenager videotaped her boyfriend attacking two sleeping fishermen parked on an isolated stretch of highway in the North-West to launch their own website with the brutal footage, Perth Children's Court was told yesterday.
A chilling tape played in court showed the 29-year-old man creep up on a white Mitsubishi Colt parked next to the North-West Coastal Highway as dawn broke on October 19 last year.
Clad in black sunglasses, dark clothing, gloves and a hooded raincoat, he whispered: "Jim's World.com, Episode One: Madness" into a video camera held by the 17-year-old girl.
He smashed the driver's window and sprayed pepper spray into Andrew Hennessey's face. The tape showed the fishing boat skipper struggling to fight back through the smashed window while his friend jumped out of the front passenger seat.
The attacker chased John Pestana, 25, and repeatedly struck his head, arms and back with the crowbar, causing extensive bleeding.
Mr Pestana managed to disarm his assailant who in turn pointed a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, fitted with a laser beam, at him and fired over his head.
The men's pleas to be left alone could be heard just before the tape cut out.
Another snippet showed the couple driving frantically away through scrub in a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
Police prosecutor Sgt Eric Smith said the injured victims had to flag down a passing truck 10km north of the Overlander Roadhouse because the couple stole their car keys. The truck driver called an ambulance which met the pair 40km south of Carnarvon to treat Mr Pestana, who needed 60 stitches.
"She filmed it on videotape with plans to publish it on an internet site, that was the motive for the attack," Sgt Smith said.
The girl, from Mt Lawley, pleaded guilty to unlawful assault and wounding, going armed in public to cause fear and criminal damage to the car what: ). Defence lawyer Michael Tudori said his client admitted taping the ordeal but denied brandishing a knife.
Acting Children's Court president Michael Muller said the type of sentence depended on whether the girl was an unwitting accomplice or an active player in the attack. A hearing to resolve the matter will be held next month.
