i just bought a brand new 44 mag still in box Yes brand newfor 160.00 i know that they were discontinued quite some years ago my friends son bought one a long time ago and his son passed away the gun has never been shot other than testing just wanting to know how well built and the accuracy of these weapons are Thanks Lonnie

The one I shot years ago was decent enough, shot OK and no problems other than kicked like a mule. It was the snubbie version.

My friend had one about 25 years ago, and it had no real issues, it just wasn't quite as smooth or as nicely finished as the S&W 29 he had, but it shot fine, and he wishes he had it back.

I have one of the 6" models and its a pleasure to shoot. A word of warning, grips that fit it are hard to come by.

You are extraordinarily lucky to have gotten it for that kind of a price. I've owned two over the years, one I sold and one I kept. I never did shoot the second one. I also owned a S&W 29 nickel-plated revolver and, except for the better sights on the Smith, there wasn't a whole lot of difference between them.

You'll find that on the bottom of the mainspring is a retention wheel. That wheel has holes of different depths. These allow you to set your spring tension to whatever is best and whichever works reliably.




Mainspring tension is adjustable by placing the bottom of
the spring in any one of four detents drilled into the retention
wheel. Nice feature, and the lighter settings work pretty well.




The gun is a beauty, especially in stainless.




The Astra is almost identical to the Smith (below), except
the cylinder joint, which is just a tiny bit smaller.



The rain in Spain has little effect on this stainless steel model.

Ive got a little astra snubby 38spl ss. After seeing these pics, mine is a baby version of yours+short barrel. Also has the adjustable trigger pull ring in the frame. Do any other revolvers feature this?

Have you found any sites with info on Astra's?

Star go out of business

Im no gun guru, but most South Africans hated "Star" pistols. They were standard issue to our unfortunate military. Ive fired one or two and was not overly impressed with the finish and build of the Stars. It did go bang though.

I've shot several Star 28's and 30's and were very impressed. Not the 1911 type single actions though. I had a couple of guys I worked security with that carried them, and they were pretty sad looking, insides were rough, but they did seem to shoot ok. One of them clanked loudly when fired (9mm) for some reason, and wasn't very accurate, but it worked every time.
