:D

"What is Hoplophobia?
Defined as "a persistent, abnormal, and unwarranted fear of firearms", each year this surprisingly common phobia causes countless people needless distress."

"What is the cause of Hoplophobia?
Like all fears and phobias, hoplophobia is created by the unconscious mind as a protective mechanism. At some point in your past, there was likely an event linking firearms and emotional trauma. Whilst the original catalyst may have been a real-life scare of some kind, the condition can also be triggered by myriad, benign events like movies, TV, or perhaps seeing someone else experience trauma.

But so long as the negative association is powerful enough, the unconscious mind thinks: "Ahh, this whole thing is very dangerous. How do I keep myself from getting in this kind of situation again? I know, I'll attach terrible feelings to firearms, that way I'll steer clear in future and so be safe." Just like that hoplophobia is born. Attaching emotions to situations is one of the primary ways that humans learn. Sometimes we just get the wiring wrong.

The actual phobia manifests itself in different ways. Some sufferers experience it almost all the time, others just in response to direct stimuli. Everyone has their own unique formula for when and how to feel bad."

Today the Internet, tomorrow DSM-IV. ;)

Wow! It's for real. Let's wish them much success.

Can we make it a required for college graduation? Kinda like sex education or humanities is right now even if you're a physics major?

This reminds me of my first post; "Grown man crying over an EBR" I think is what I titled it. It was a hilarious thread, maybe some of you remember it - but it was about 3 years ago. I have since found out (and felt bad after) that this guy who literally cried when he saw my AR-15 had a tramuatic experience with I think his Dad's AR-15 when he was a kid and hasn't been the same since.

At last! A treatment program for Hoplophobia!
Sure, as there should be.
IMO an irrational fear of anything is a sign that the old brain chemistry might not be functioning right. So after they get their prescription for Prozac and/or Xanax, let 'em get adjusted and then invite them to go shooting!

Wouldn't hoplophobia constitute a "mental condition" and therefore require treatment?? Wouldn't the new laws they are passing (or trying to pass) make them ineligible to own guns?? Just a thought........

something :scrutiny: seems fishy to me.

I'm not sure, but I don't see anything specific in the material. It seems like you could plug in any definition for any phobia. It may be that they're just trying to sell their books and CD's, but it's still a hoot to see hoplophobia get *some* kind of recognition. "I saw it on the web so it must be true."

Sounds reasonable to me! Armed Greek citizens were "hoplites", so, fear of an armed citizen it is!! This category would include a male sibling -- the family Communist. . . .

How do we do it?

We won't actually do anything: you will. Our practitioners will teach you to regain control of your emotions...

<lol>Can we market it as a general treatment for Liberals and their Emotions/Feelings? <lol>

I thought Jeff Cooper coined this term.

He did; but it has increasingly come into use by the "gun culture" and has now apparently become an accepted term in the psychological/psychiatric community.

FWIW, that looks like a legitimate site! Will wonders never cease!??!

Wow! VIP treatment program for only $2497 (and up). Lets pass the hat and see if we could get the Hildabeast, Chuckie Schumer, that Bloomberg guy........doya think....:banghead:

Hoplopobia is a fear of weapons (not just firearms). I don't think it actually has acceptance as a "true" phobia yet but by the same token II actually met someone undergoing treatment for a fear of knives (and strangely enough spiders, I wonder if there's any connection). The only thing she can handle right now are plastic picnic knives and that's after some serious work.

Not that I'm aware of...

No APA or APS credibility there. Just some 'net gun-geek term.

A quick search for "Hoplophobia" in PsychInfo, a gigantic psychology database, pulls nothing. No peer-reviewed journal publications = no way that it could be "accepted" in the psych community... sorry guys.

Yeah, Not Accepted In Psych Community...

I would think most conventional psychologists/psychiatrists would probably subsume a fear of firearms under one of the already existent categories, with no need to create an entirely new designation.

This brings up an interesting situation, though. My wife was talking to her graduate advisor not too long ago, and the issue turned to firearms. Apparently, his sister and brother-in-law had made plans to drop by for a visit. His brother-in-law wanted to bring a pistol with him, for self-protection. He told his brother-in-law that he did not allow firearms in his home, and that if he insisted on bringing firearms, that they should not plan on coming by at all.

My wife asked me what I thought of it. I told her that I thought her advisor was well within his rights to say "no" (it's his home, after all), but that it seemed counterproductive to allow his prejudice against firearms to jeopardize a family visit. Guns are forever. Family, however, may not always be around, so we should enjoy them while we have the chance.
