Guns are gone at the 2 Kissimmee Wallys. Haven't been over to St Cloud in awhile. Joe

Yeah, we wouldn't want someone heading to Orlando and Dizzyworld stopping for ammo to supply their shooting spree!

I went to a Walmart the other day and noticed they didn't have any guns. I asked the sporting goods employee and he said that only the top 500 stores will be carrying them now. In that town, there are 2 walmarts with a 3rd being built right now. Kind of hard to put up top 500 sales figures when you have 2 stores that service a population of about 40,000 people when college is out and 70-80k when college is in. A town an hour away from there has 1 Walmart and they are still selling them. They have probably 30 -40k people. Naturally, the store in the town with only 1 walmart will sell more than the town with 2. Walmart does have a good selection of guns you can order. They keep a book with the selection in it. The downside is that it takes 5-10 days if their supplier has it in stock plus you aren't going to get anything that doesn't fit the "hunting" category.

I'm not so sure the guns are going away because of economic considerations or "simple business" as others have stated...I was in one of our local
Wal-Mart stores this morning in Colorado Springs (where gun and ammo business is quite brisk) and the guy in sporting goods told me that he thought they would stop selling guns and probably ammo by next spring. Sounds like a corporate decision not so much influenced by market forces but politics.

I doubt it's only the top 500 that will still carry guns/ammo. More likely the more rural stores that will continue. We have 2 within 12 miles of each other and they both continue to have a large selection of guns (2 display cases full in each store). As a matter of fact, the second one was just built within the last 4 years. If the sales numbers are there, they won't stop.

:D Yes, our California WMs stopped selling firearms some time ago, but they still have plenty of ammo (and BB and airsoft and paintball guns).
The regular sporting goods clerk doesn't even check my ID anymore since I'm in there so often.

Kevin G,

The one on Platte? I lived there for a year in 98. I was at Carson. I lived off Uintah.

This Wal-Mart is in Texas City, TX, which is still has a large shooting/hunting/sporting population. Therefore I don't see a business reason. Also, there was no ammo displayed. This disturbes me....
A lot of the Wally Worlds in the Houston area (and any major metro area) no longer sell firearms. They even dropped a lot of their "paraphenalia" like cases, cleaning supplies, etc. However, the ones in my area (Willowbrook, Champions Forest) still have ammunition. (Granted, I don't have go-go gadget eyes, so I can't tell you what the prices/calibers are.)

It's my general policy to avoid WallMart whenever possible.

Support your local gun dealer or buy online. I can match their ammo prices with a little effort. When saving that dollar at Wallmart is the difference between eating or not I guess I'll buy there. Until then I'd rather shop where there are knowledgeable people that support my gun rights.

While it is hard to beat the prices of Wal*Mart, I try and support local buisnesses when buying specialty items.

The Texas City walmart has a habit of hiring crooks. My sister-in-law has had her DL# lifted there TWICE. She keeps having people call her about money she owes because her DL# was on a check written by someone with a totally different name. The second time, the police traced it back to Wallyworld (and then their followup lead there for the first theft). Before she left Texas, she started shopping at the WalMart in Alvin.

I know, off topic, but I just had to rant about the TC WalMart.

On topic (sorta): My sister-in-law is the most gun oriented woman I know. When my brother died, I helped her divide up his collection, and every other gun I pulled out of the gun safe, she said "That one is mine, not your brother's.":D I like it when she hangs out with my wife. She is quite a positive influence!

I suppose she could be talking about John Fleming, who came over to Walmart from Target in 2000.

Ah yes, "dot-com boy". Target seems to be doing better since he left. Even as head of marketing, I doubt he has full authority to pull gun sales company wide. He may not realize that yet though. ;)

While Wally-World is definitely trying to expand its market base and appeal, I don't see what's left of the old-guard totally abandoning profit opportunities where they are viable.

My guess: Wal-Mart is going down the same lane as Sears. In 20 years, your grandkids will ask you: "who is Wal-Mart?"

Wal Mart sells guns? Guess I didn't notice , never shop there . Rather spend my money at the true "local " bussinesses .So far so good .

If saving a dollar on ammo makes the difference between eating and not eating... I think I'll forgo the ammo altogether ;)

What do you expect the quality of people they get at their wages?
I went to a new Wally in Greenville Michigan, a big hunting area, and they had a display of guns, not the best selection....But, most of the workers in there, where did they come from???? Looks like rejects from Mc Donalds!!!!

Sorry to hear about your brother. He had a great wife, sharing some of the families heirlooms with you, I assume.

In some ways, WalMart displaying guns is a good thing--It may be the only time some people see guns, and if WalMart sells them, they must be mainstream. When you have to go to a segregated store to get guns and supplies, we've lost another small battle.

Here's the type of employer you are supporting if you shop at Wal-Mart.

Excertps:

Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest private employer, is pushing to create a cheaper, more flexible work force by capping wages, using more part-time workers and scheduling more workers on nights and weekends

....

But some Wal-Mart workers say the changes are further reducing their already modest incomes and putting a serious strain on their child-rearing and personal lives. Current and former Wal-Mart workers say some managers have insisted that they make themselves available around the clock, and assert that the company is making changes with an eye to forcing out longtime higher-wage workers to make way for lower-wage part-time employees.

....

These moves have been unfolding in the year since Wal-Mart’s top human resources official sent the company’s board a confidential memo stating, with evident concern, that experienced employees were paid considerably more than workers with just one year on the job, while being no more productive. The memo, disclosed by The New York Times in October 2005, also recommended hiring healthier workers and more part-time workers because they were less likely to enroll in Wal-Mart’s health plan.

Another great scam by Wal-Mart http://www.wakeupwalmart.com/news/20060927-wapo.html. They have been critized in the media for the low percentage of employees that are covered by their health insurance. The response? Make new hires enroll in a plan with an individual deductable of $3000 and if your spouse is covered it goes up to $6000! The percentage of employees covered goes up but they are covered by an essentially non-existant plan. If you are hired as a full time employee for minimum wage, $5.15 p/h, and you somehow manage to get 2000 hours per year your gross income would be $10,300. Makes meeting that $3000 deductable rather difficult don't you think?

Here's an interesting look at the minimum wage over time. Adjusted for inflation it is currently at it's lowest point in 50 years. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0774473.html

The Waltons didn't come to hold 5 of the top 10 spots on the Forbes 400 by sharing their money with their employees. Those 5 people have a combined net worth of $77.7 BILLION.

Wal mart only uses guns to get people into the sporting goods section...eventually the plan is to stop selling them period according to several managers I have talked to. Right now the stores with the best gun sells are recieving guns from stores with few gun sells...many are going to be discounted to move them off the shelf...not saying this is the gospel truth...just what my managers have told me.

It's not gospel truth. They aren't going to kill off all the gun sales, just the ones that don't make a ton of money. If this was the truth, then they wouldn't have bothered putting in a gun section in our walmart 3 months ago. However, the new walmart they built up the road doesn't have one.

The gun section they just put in our local walmart is booming.

Figuratively speaking of course.

Now I'm not even sure that Wally's employees know what they are talking about. So far I've heard the demographics explaination, the profitability explaination, the doing away completely explaination and the "top-stores" explaination. I don't really care whether they stop selling them or not anyhoo. Big 5 and my favorite pawn shop has a good selection of longarms as well as ammo. So far the best ammo prices and firearms prices are at my favorite local pawn shop. Wally charges $7.95 for a box of my 9mm Luger, my local pawn shop charges $6.95. For handguns, I'll continue shopping at the pawn shop.

One out of the local 3 wallyworlds has stopped selling guns and ammo. One of the remaining two has been discounting ammo heavily so I think they will probably close. The remaining one does a brisk firearms/ammo business and I assume will stay open. I think it is purely a business decision.

As far as how wally world treats it employees, um, maybe gettin a valuable skill that can't be taught it in 15 minutes might do the trick? The lowest rung of uneducated, unskilled workers are always at the mercy of low wage employees. If you expect wallyworld to give you a a gold plated benefit package when you can be easily replaced with the next 17 year old high school drop out defies simple economics. If they do offer such benefits, you'll see atomchaser-marts springing up on fruited plain to pick up the bottom line consumers.

It is purely a business decision. The meglomart in santee makes a ton of money off of ammo and the manager said "how can I stop selling gun products when I make more money off of them than two of my other departments" guys its a business decision I am fairly confident...I still keep a wary eye but they keep getting shipments of ammo and stuff so I am fairly confident.

Also big 5 charges so much for ammo and the weapon selection is poor at best I have a friend who is an FFL I will continue to go to him.
