Well after being away most of the summer I got home a couple weeks ago and finally got to check out my AUK knives that I received through the group buy that hso put together!

First of all I'd like to thank hso for doing all the legwork on this group buy!!

These knives are my first foray into hand made knives made by a small company and I ordered a drop point and a dagger...the drop point is pretty much my favorite blade shape and the dagger was just something I've always wanted since I was young even though I knew it probably would not be a practical knife.

Well I must say my first reaction to holding the knives was that they were quite small yet heavy and did not really fill the hand with the lack of scales....after a bit of trying different positions though I found the grip to be acceptable. What I really like about these knives is the thin profile that the lack of scales provides and i find the drop point sits on my belt without my even knowing it's there! The dagger on the other hand is not exactly carry friendly however because of the pointy end of the grip area.....not sure why Faud changed this design because the original design he had on his web site had a rounded end instead of the pointy one that he is now making...

...as you can see in the pictures sitting down while wearing the dagger in it's sheath could be bloody painfull if the sheath gets caught on the arm of the chair of couch. This has happened to me a few times with the drop point's sheath but it is not a problem because the drop point does not have a sharp point on the end of the handle.

The drop point is about the perfect size( about 3 3/4" blade and is quite beefy at 1/4" thickness....I'd say this blade is pretty much indestructable!
It's sharp but not as sharp as I'd like....not sure if it's because of the the thickness of the blade or just the angle of the grind?
The grinds on the knife are a little uneven on the false edge and tip and one side was ground a little more then the other.....not a big deal on a utility style knife but being a finishing carpenter I tend to notice small details.

The only thing I don't really like with my drop point is the hand gaurd area which seems to me to be a little to ramp like in that it allows your finger to slide up and over if you push forward on the grip.

The picture of the drop point from Faud's web site shows a more curved and vertical gaurd but maybe that has been changed or mine was just shaped differently....

The sheaths are simple and well made. The dagger is very tight in it's sheath and the sheath is very stiff.... drop point is quite loose in it's sheath and it is a lot softer.
All in all i'm pretty happy with the drop point though I will likely try to re profile the finger gaurd a little, clean up the false edge and try to sharpen it a little more.
The dagger is definately not getting carried on my belt unless I reprofile the sharp end back to Faud's original shape but I don't think I'll bother because I like the look of it and I didn't really buy it to carry anyways...it's more of a novelty item.

Thanks for the review. The butt of the dagger may have been changed to make it a more effective striker.

I think your right... and it also forces you to watch your weight!

No spare tires allowed!! :D

I'm guessing that a pointy end is both a good "skull crusher" and prolly easier to make.

CWL,

The pointed butt is more difficult to make because you have to make it symmetric as opposed to a continuous curve.

Fuad simply thought that it would look better with the pointy butt.

Leadhead,

Send them back instead of trying to modify them if they're not quite to your liking. Trace/sketch what you'd like the changes to be and Fuad can take care of them.

Keep in mind he's a craftsman like you and all his work is done by hand in a small relatively primitive shop (about the space of a good sized master closet) instead of being cut out by robots. Small variations will be evident in such work, but anything that isn't to the liking of the owner can also be altered to suit and Fuad stands behind all his work.

Hi hso,

No complaints on my part either, I'm still waiting for mine to get finished!

That's probably a good idea...I'm pretty handy with a file and stone but Faud could do it quicker and better I'm sure!

It does look pretty good and it feels good in the hand as well. I did notice that the sheath he made for the durendal dagger has more of a drop style to it and sits a little lower on the belt and if forced up would dig into the sheath instead of the skin.

I think for the dagger another flat ground across the point to form a coffin shape might look good and feel safer to wear.

Mine (and the two others) here in Iraq are working fine. :)

I did strop the edge on mine to pop hair. Cardboard works great and the edge of the AUK sheath just needs a bit more abrasive to be as good as any strope out there.

Used as in carried lots and cutting normal stuff, yes. "Combat use" - no, thank God as I have 33% of all the deployed AUKs in Iraq. :D

Things have gotten lots quieter here - by a huge margin, so no feats of ripping doors off of buildings or housing units, etc.

That being said, based on what has happened to me in my time here, having something sharp and tough enables me to cut through light metal or cloth or rope or seat belt material. That capability is one that I have needed in the past and refuse to abandon even though things are quiet.

I've tried several different knives and use/carry the AUK when I'm not in full battle rattle which is most of my day. Valkman's fighter gets the nod when I'm in IBA out & about and gives me different options.

But I always have the AUK, my Beretta, a pocket lighter and a basic load of ammo firmly attached to me except when I'm in the shower.

I put mine to use this weekend hiking with my woman....she's from Sweden and thought it was quite romantic to carve our initials into a log....while carving and holding the knife in different positions I was aware of the sharper edges at the rear of the grip that have not been beveled or de-tuned.....I guess mine will end up a true custom if it goes back to Faud!:)
I think it's hard to nail the erganomics for everone with one design and it's interesting to see how much Faud has changed the design of the Auk's..

Here's a picture of the sheath that came with the drop point and a new holster I got from http://www.pacificcanvasandleather.com/ for my Colt New Frontier.

It's nice to hear from other users of the Auk....I was starting to wonder how many people were in on the group buy and what others thought of this knife in use.
Any one else find the finger gaurd shape a little to ramp like or did yours come with more of a hook?
Right now with mine if I had to plant the blade into a cougar or bear I think I might end up with a cut hand(from the blade).....but maybe the adrenalin would help with a death grip on the knife!!:D
So let's hear it.....who's using there Auk's and while we are at it....Is anyone carrying the dagger?

Mine works good for me - but I have medium sized hands. My take is that the thick blade and sharp edge do exactly what I want. I'm not planning to stab anything except with an icepick grip anyway. :)

Good to hear Al!

I don't think I'd go for the icepick grip either...and I doubt I'll ever stab a bear with mine even though predatory black bear attacks seem to be on the rise in B.C.
I am considering making a nice sturdy walking stick that is slotted to accept one of these blades as a bayonet....hmm maybe a winter project.

On second thought maybe the icepick grip would be better with the thumb hooked around the end to help secure it....

is that the Victory pistol holster?

It's the victory pilot shoulder holster,
http://www.pacificcanvasandleather.com/holsters/pcl_12_sh.htm

It was a bit tight on my SA due to the ejection plunger on the barrel but with a bit of "Sno-seal" leather conditioner and work it fits really nice now!
The colt is a .22lr and the holster also works well with Ruger single six's with the 4 5/8" barrel.

Another thing I'll add about the AUK is that the slots that are cut in the finger gaurd area are ideal for striking swedish fire steels!
