Authenticity of video game weapons?

Note: I know it's just a video game, I'm sure not everything is accurate, etc. I'm just curious. I've asked these questions in-game and was met with hostility, so I'd like to avoid that here.

Hi everyone,

I had some questions about the weapons in a video game I recently bought. It's called "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare," and as the name suggests, there are a lot of modern weapons, like the M16, AK47, and so on.

But I've noticed that some of the weapons are missing minor details, and so I was bored and took some screen shots to ask those that would know.

First screen shot: http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/834/shot0009nr3.jpg

It's an M4 with a red dot sight. First, I'm wondering: (1) What sight is this? (2) Why is there no front sight? I've never seen the front sight removed from an M4 when optics are being used. (3) Does a digital camouflage paint job exist for weapons?

Here's another screen shot looking through the sight: http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/3949/shot0010kx4.jpg

Second screen shot: http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/8097/shot0011rl7.jpg

It's an H&K G36c with a grenade launcher. It's not a great shot, so bear with me. I'm just wondering if (a) the G36c even has a grenade launcher attachment, and if so, (b) the one pictured in the screen shot is accurate.

I didn't bother taking pictures of the other weapons as I know some of the other grenade launchers for the other assault rifles are not correct (i.e. an H&K G3 with an M203).

Third screen shot: http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/2807/shot0004kz2.jpg

This is another H&K G36c. I'm just wondering what sight that is.

Again, I know it's just a game, but I was curious. :p

Would there be any legal issues with the gun makers making digital renditions that are too close? If I remember correctly, the guns usually are spelled differently, like it'd be an AR-16, Mack 10, etc.

I know that there have been legal issues with various games, as suggested by completely random names of weapons, but in CoD4, many of the weapons are named correctly. The M4, M16, AK47, G3, MP5, G36c, and M1014 are all present, go by those names, and appear to be accurate aesthetically.

Dunno--it doesn't seem like Infinity Ward (CoD4 developer) had any legal problems.

Looks pretty good. Alot of the aftermarket makers offer uppers without front sight/ rail mounted standard or flip-up . . . again, aftermarket, but I have seen digicam on rifles recently DSA offers six different digicam and about 13 other different patterns for their FALs, for example. About 1/3 of their AR's don't have a fixed front sight & that is just one manufacturer I pulled outta my Favs. The Optic on the AR looks like a Reflex by ATN.

I am no use on the G36 questions.

I have been playing a PC game called Stalker . . . outstanding accurate weapon detail. Com-bloc and Nato . . . I love it, start the game with an authentic Makarov and a smile . .. aquire AK74s, Krinks, ARs, G36, Draganov etc. . . . almost play it just for the guns.

I just started Call to Duty 4 and the weapons seem pretty accurate so far. The only thing that sucks is I've given up PC based games and converted to the PS3. I'm so use to the keyboard/mouse combo that I can't hit squat with the PS3 controller.

I think most games pride themselves on how accurate their weapons and equipment appear. They even try for the correct rank insignia on the uniforms.

Ohh yeah, CoD4, and STALKER, but very fun. Very impressed by the accuracy of those games.

Crysis got me very annoyed, highly trained elite fighter, and you can't hit squat even prone. I have shot my stock 10/22 at probably equivilant ranges standing with better accuracy than that!

1. Looks like a cheap BSA style of sight, definitely not an expensive Aimpoint/EOTech
2. A lot of M4s these days have the option of Back Up Iron Sights - they were primarily designed to be used with optics, so iron sights are optional.
3. Yes - paint it however you want.

I recently did a google search on the FEG P9R, which is a Hungarian double-stack 14+1 9mm.... and came across a page on a FPS game where the FEG P9R was one of the available weapons. Talk about an obscure choice for a video game gun.

My first thought was, whoa they must really be going for detail...for accuracy... who but a weirdo would even know what a FEG was not to mention the P9R? Then I looked at the "rules" for the P9R in the game -- they gave it an 8 shot magazine. :D

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 is anther great game. Generally, any game that has Tom Clancy's name on it tends to be very realistic. In GRAW2 on Xbox360 w/ the camera accessory, you can even put your face on the in-game character, and as you progress through the game, you can unlock new, real-world, name-brand tactical gear (ie, Oakley goggles and Dragon Skin body armor).

Hm, so it's not "unrealistic" then?

I do intend to eventually own an M4 (I'm a poor college student at the moment, so it'll be a few years). What are some good after market companies for various add-ons like the rails on the front part of the M4?

Or hell, what's a good company to buy an M4 from? RRA? Bushmaster?

I'm pretty sure the sights are Tascos or BSAs. You don't need a front sight when using optics - although some people like to co-witness them or keep irons as a backup. Some companies make gas blocks that don't have foresights - usually with a rail instead.

Yes you can get digital paint schemes on your guns - but I doubt anybody in the military bothers. I never painted my service weapons but people I know who have just painted them one colour - it's too much bother to make a pattern for it to be worth it, and it's only going to get scratched to buggery in five minutes.

Yes you can attach a grenade launcher to a G36C - HK's own AG36 fits, but I don't believe an M203 would go without modification.

I think the makers of the game bought the cheap red dots to gets the specs and put into the game. Didn't want to spend $500+ on an aimpoint/acog/EOtech/etc.

Can you imagine a spec ops operator busting through door with a BSA red dot?

Hehehe....that is kind of funny. :D

For a video game they are pretty accurately rendered. More and more detail would eat up more and more processor power that could be used for smooth gameplay and other graphics. It's a lot more accurate than games like "Black". I love that game but it's hard not to chuckle at the AK's left hand ejection and 60rd mags. I think most weapons are a cross between authenticity and arcade, in games although they are getting better.

The sight is a trijicon reflex, they also have a acog in this game so I think the cheap scopes aren't what they were modding after. COD4 did do research with the military for all of these weapons, I remember seeing the pictures of the developers with all the guns seen in the game. The front sight is probably removeable via gas block rail. 3. I also know people with digital camo paint on there guns I think it looks good in the game but in real life it looks kinda tacky.

There are flaws to this game but for the most part they are accurate depictions what they are modded after.

Say hi if you ever see me in game my name is : NRA_Ranger

Of course its not trijicon.

It's a freakin "famous maker" $55 red dot. LOL:D

A grenade launcher was made specifically for the G36. It is called the AG36.

The one in your screen shot is indeed the M203 though.

Some weapon names are trademarked, but if it was assigned by the military (M16, M249, etc), then it is in the public domain and can be used freely. Goldeneye changed the names at the last minute due to, IIRC, a higher-up's directive from within the company.

Evil monkey, you are right, the famous maker is flat on top like the screenshot . .. the ATN reflex I mentioned is round. I think ya got that one nailed.

I thought the makers of Doom did a great job with the BFG9000. The wide shot pattern and plasma blast (altough pixelated) look almost exactly as it should.
