Hi guys, just thought I would share my good fortune!

I have been building a switch barrel rifle combo for the last 6 months or so.
A remington 700 SPS/SS/DM, with a blue printed & sleeved bolt & action with a 30-06 & 280 Rem barrles (Shilen #7 heavy match Select).

My wife suprised me by buying me a 5.5-22X50 NXS nightforce scope for my birthday/anniversary present! Holly crap! I never dreamed she would do that!
Im just flying high now!
Now I just have to wait 10 more days untill I get home so I cant put it all together! I can hardly wait!

I had both barrels built at the full 30" length. This way, I can truly compare the two cartridges (performance wise).

The good old 30-06 will be a fun cartridge to push out long range!
I am planning to shoot the 190 grain berger VLD around 2700-2750fps.

Replaced the stock with a Chote custom tactical stock. This stock is suprisingly well built! Solid, and very adjustable!

My goal is to shoot both these barrels out to 1760yards (1 mile).

I have done this with the 300 win mag many times. Fun stuff!
I have pushed my .308win to 1500 yards. But my bullets are destabilizing at this distance.

Wow, thats farther than I have ever heard pf a .308 being shot, much less a 30-06 at 1760! Good luck with that.

Shouldn't a 30-06 shoot farther than a .308 because you can use the same bullet but the 30-06 has a larger case capacity? The only thing I can think of that would make it otherwise is if the .308 had a longer throat allowing for the use of heavier match bullets with a higher ballistic coefficient.

The added velocities allow the .30-06 to be pushed further.

While the .308 is perfectly capable of shooting heavier rounds, it cannot reach the required velocities for long range shooting with them.

The only limiting factor to shooting a mile with any high power firearm is bullet stability.
The only Reason my .308 didnt make it to a mile , is because my twist rate is only 1:12". The bullets I was shooting are 168 gr. Berger VLD's.
If i relpace the barrel with a quality 1:10" twist, and work up a load with these bullets, it should be possible.
The faster twist will give my bullet a longer gyroscopic stability period in which my bullet can traverse further down range before becomming unstable again.
As long as I have enough vertical adjustment, I should be ok.

The old 30-06 should be that much easier.
