Hey guys went on my first hunt today, for pigs. Saw lotsa fresh pig poop but no pigs. Saw a herd(proper term?) of deer about 100 yards away, they didn't notice us until we got closer. If only it was deer season. Took a nice hike. Man trying to hike up and down steep hills with no trail, quietly is exhausting.

ONe thing bothered me. My older (by a lot)brother says to be at his house 5:30 am, besides what clothing to wear that's all he says. I'm there 5:30 am, knock on the door, wait, no answer, knock again, wait no answer. No bright lights are on to indicate he woke up. So I ring the door bell, ONCE, ding dong. Well wait a little bit and his wife answers the door sleepily. Says make yourself at home I"m going back to bed. Turns out he's in the shower. Rest of the day all I hear is how inconsiderate I was, I shoulda had ESP and knew he was taking a shower and would be out shortly. Next time blah blah blah......... :banghead: :fire: :cuss:  Did I violate some kind of hunting etiquette dealing with the early morning meeting or common sense?

No breach of ettiquette. Now you know better, tho - bring your own thermos and wait outside by the truck.

Next time, come up with a time of how long you're going to wait for him--as in, if you're not out by 5:45 then I'll leave without you.

Congratulations on your first hunt!

I hope you had a good time, and aren't disappointed by not bagging any game. For me at least, there's a big difference between hunting and killing.

I'm not a very experienced hunter myself, but the times when I've gone out and just enjoyed being outdoors have been the best part; "bringing home the bacon" is a bonus.

As for breaching etiquette, you didn't do anything wrong. Unless mind-reading is an ability unique to your family, your brother sure shouldn't hold it against you that you did what he wanted you to do--be ready to go at a particular time.

So...when are you going on your next hunt?

I would've been dissapointed if we didn't see anything at all. Getting close enough to some deer to take a shot if it had been deer season, was nice.

I want to go soon, the license I just bought expires in July. Then it's another $33 to the DFG. I think I'll try and convince my friends to go on a guided hunt with me. So I can give hunting with people who I actually like a try ;) .

Meddling around in the boonies, talking to critters, is one of the better ways to occupy yourself. Doing it with friends is good, but the sitting around a campfire and BSing about it is one of the finest things in life...

Whenever the assembly point is my house I always leave the door unlocked, coffee brewing and a couple of lights on so everyone in the party knows to come in and make a cup of Jo.

Sounds like bro needs to lighten up some!! Seems like too - had you been late and after his shower - you'd have gotten a complaint too :)

Nothing bagged? No sweat - as others have said - much pleasure is to be had communing with nature - a chance to get one's thoughts in order - appreciate things we so often just don't see.

Just getting out can be good. Next time ..... ;)

Sounds like you know my brother :) . My brother's an arrogant, condescending, mean spirited :cuss: . But he's a :cuss: with 25 years of hunting experience and a freezer always full of meat.

i think you did right. our family is a little more open. our house is often the rally point and the door is open lights are on and the coffee going. noise isnt a problem, as we are all up and getting ready to go out anyway :p even the mom wakes up to send us off!

not everyone though can be so lucky :) :)

Your brother have a lot of cold blood in his veins, I am 60 and been hunting for 45 years, and I never can sleep well the night before opening day, the exitment of the coming hunt, keep me awake and I am ready, showered, coffeed, and breakfasted well before 5.30 a. m.
Matter of fact, by 5.30 I am in the woods already, to better enjoy the entyre experience.
Get a new brother!!

Chickenfried,

Sounds like a good first hunt and don't worry, when it's deer season you'll see plenty of pigs and no deer :D

In hunter speak 5:30am means 6-7am per Patric McManus (very funny expert hunter/author) :what:

5.30 in the morning Jeez. I"m getting home from hunting at that time of the morning :D I recon your brother is a Bit like my little brother .He did not follow in our fathers footsteps & chose to move to the city at a young age .Some years later he mentioned he would'nt mind coming to work with me one night . To see what I did for a living .I explained to him that I was not working naer home & was about 200kms north of home .No worries says he I'll meet you at the front gate of the property yuor working ,you can guide me to your camp.I sat (after driving 30kms from my camp making it 60kms from where I planned to shoot that night ) for 3 hrs before his Nibs showed up with no explination :banghead: Just Remember you've got a lot of hunting in front of you .Being there is the adventure
