To all,
Wild hog tastes nothing like store bought pork. It is a very mild red meat and quite a bit tougher than domestic pork. We either do ham roasts or we grind for sausage or we make a dish called Kalua Pork which involves boiling the meat in water and hickory salt it is then pulled and seasoned with various good stuff. It makes for great BBQ pork sandwich.
I caped the boar for a trophy shoulder mount. It is in the freezer as we speak.

I'd like to echo best wishes to Tori and Bailee and especially parents. Great parents! At age 70 my best memories are camping in tent and hunting hogs and deer in central Florida swamp with my boys starting at age 7. We used compass, now boys use GPS. [email protected]

Nice work on inspiring our youth. I spent some time with my nephews today, really enjoy that enthusiasm.
On hog meat, what weight does the hog become tough meat to eat? I've heard the little ones taste better, but where do you draw the line for optimal flavor versus weight balance. I have the opportunity to hunt them in N. California and am trying to balance the trophy vs cuisine. I prefer cuisine, but at guided hunt prices, well, you know, I want both. For my wife and I, one of each may be the ticket.
Is it like alaska where the huge flounder are fun to catch, but the 30-40lb'rs are what you save for the freezer?
If I lived in hog country it would hard be home on the weekends.

It is my experience that sows stay relatively tender no matter the weight. boars start getting tough at about 1 year of age. Maybe an average of 100 + lbs.
No wild pork however, will be as tender as domestic raised pork.
My advice is to shoot as big a hog as you can on a guided hunt. And in any case have a GREAT time..

Tori, I was 13 before I got to go on my first big game hunt, but I remember it like it was yesterday. You won't ever forget your first time. Congrats.
Bailee, nice rabbit and good shot! I was probably about that age when I got my first rabbit, down in Arizona.

Way to go girls!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to show this to my girls, they are young, but have talked about hunting with Daddy!!!
Also, where did you hunt the pig? My dad and I are going to Freer, TX this weekend for a three day hunt! I am just as excited to read a pig story as to read a story about a young lady doing the hunting!!!

Outstanding!! My oldest daughter is almost 13 and said she wants to hunt with me. I almost dropped a tear. It's nice to see young girls involved in hunting like that. Or as the bumper sticker says: "Parents who hunt with their kids don't hunt for their kids."

Mom has always soaked wild pork in milk to help tenderize and take the wild taste out. Its been my experience over the years that this works and make the meat taste awesome.
Paducah is near Lubbock, while Freer is not far from Laredo in Southern Texas. It doesn't matter where in Texas, just bring on the Hogs!!!!!!!

Sat. was a week ago, my Great-GrandSon who is 7 yrs. old killed his first wild boar which ran about 240# with a New England Single Shot .22 Hornet. One shot behind the head while sitting in a tree stand with his father.
He was one proud little fellow when they brought it by for me to see.

Sure enough. It is 22gr of IMR SR 4759 under a 150 gr Sierra flat point. The ones that say 30-30 on them.
This load just about duplicates 30-30 ballistics and is a simple joy to shoot out of a full sized .308 bolt gun. It has no recoil and it is a very tame muzzle blast as well.
Here is that group shot after I tried to correct the focus in MS Picture it..It might be a little better.
