I would like to have the forcing cone lengthened or "backbored" on my 870 turkey gun. I'm trying to improve the pattern density at longer range for turkey hunting.

I am also thinking of using this gun to hunt deer, loaded with slugs.

My question is, Can I "Safely" shoot slugs through this barrel using a rifled choke, iif it has been backbored?

Forcing cone lengthening is different than backboring. The forcing cone work is exactly what it says, making it longer. Backboring is opening up the bore of the barrel down its length. Both help patterns, the forcing cone work is probably worth it but backboring will cost plenty for not as much gain.

You can shoot slugs after either job is done provided the backboring isn't really large. Forcing cone work will improve slug accuracy most times, where backboring would be rare indeed to improve slug accuracy.

For your gun I would recommend getting the forcing cone cut and leave it at that.

THANKS

Thank you.

I mentioned both (forcing cone and backboring ) thinking they are different, but not sure. I'm here to learn and it's working allready! :)

Welcome, Roscoe! As usual, H nailed it.

While I regard a long cone as a good idea, it's not mandatory. I've 10 870 barrels here, 3 or 4 have longer cones than standard. Both my slug shooters have 1 1/2" cones, and the first barrel for Frankenstein has one also. It'll group inside 3" at 50 yards, the others under 5" at 100. Both groups ETE.
