I have a P17 Enfield I purchased recently with some damage - namely a ringed barrel and a feed ramp that has been gouged and shodily repaired. Other than that, it's a very nice rifle parts and stock wise.

I can re-weld and correct the feed ramp no problem, but I haven't done a barrel before.

What would a smith charge for a re-barrel for a gun like this, ballpark? Let's assume it's a straightforward remove/replace and attaching a front sight.

I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth it to do. I have hopes of turning this into a good service rifle for matches, but don't wanna spend more than a good NIB service rifle will run me.

Thx.

I've always done my own barrels, but for a point of reference, if you get a barrel from ER SHaw ($135), they will install and test it for $60 ... I'm not suggesting that you will be looking for a $135 barrel for competition (I don't really know) but still I don't see how you could possibly come close to the price of a NIB rifle if all it needs is a new barrel ... that's just my $.02 ...

FYI ER Shaw Website

E.R. Shaw is about as cheap as it gets, but there's another issue:

Welding the feed ramp will likely compromise the receiver's heat treating. You could wind up with an unsafe rifle, or one that will quickly develop lock lug set back.

You might want to get a professional opinion before doing this.

Swing set,
I just spent the day at the gunsmith's turning down a Adams and Bennet .338 blank for a P-17 enfield in .338-06. I'll be doing about 40% of the labor+ learning from the gunsmith. A&B was the only barrel I could find that would fit. If you only wanted a replacement barrel in 30-06 ,It shouldn't be a problem. Try gunparts. They should have what you need. If not search google.

Yeah, welding isn't the way to go. It's not the right kind of metal. One plan is to just polish out the mess, if it's not too deeply gouged. A new barrel would be better as it sounds like the barrel's been abused in the first place. Not what you want for competition a shooting.
