Baseball bats anyone?

I am kind of handy with a bat, but then again, I have played ball all my life. Still do. I would feel pretty good with one. No, not as good as if I had my 1911, etc.

I agree. General knowledge of using blunt weapons can come in handy. Ripping off an opponent's arm and using it to create some blunt force trauma would be a good tactic. I have heard of someone in a road rage incident ripping off his antena and beating someone down with it. What a resourceful fella right? I had a buddy who used a bottle jack on someone's car. Crushed the radiator and scared the B-Geez-us out of the driver. 2x4s with nails in them.... there is a long list of generally usefull blunt weapons all of which can cause a cranial circuit board to trip a breaker.

When I was a kid my friends and I would play Conan the barbarian. This was hours of fun and many weeks of recovery from various bruises and lacerations. My own invention was a machete blade attached to an axe handle. The handle was cut to insert the tang of the blade and then bolted and duct taped to reenforce it. The thing is in my attic somewhere, and after this discussion I seem to have the urge to bring it back down again.

Jesus!!!

I would hate to get into a road rage incident with either Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, nor Jason Giambi. They are most certainly lethal weapons with a bat in their hands.

One wrong move on my part and my head is going to end up in upper deck!

Even in the hands of a weak man, a bat will put your johnson in the dirt.

I took my brother out with a baseball bat when we were about 5 & 6. We were playing baseball, and we had a hard time hitting the ball. My brother plopped the ball on top of a trash can turned up-side down. Then, he told me "Hit it!" So I did...and him too. He never messed with me again, a considerable fact in light of his +11 months age on me. Lil bro left his mark.

+1 on the little league bats. I keep my old one in the backseat of my truck. Its just like a heavy billy club and its still got some good grip tape on it. I love pommel? of baseball bats too.

reading through this thread again i another thought to share with all.. i decided a long time ago if some smuck made me use a bat or axe handle on him i was going low first to take out his legs and ability to escape what he had coming.. i'm getting too old for just messing around:D..

Nah, go up top. Go for the legs first and he can jump back and you're over extended. Go up top and you'll either score on his head or collarbone or he'll block with a forearm which goes bust with amazing ease.

Either way, you chalk one up in the win column.

a bat carries a lot "stop right now" power. You can stab someone until they wander off to die, but a slugger to the bean says "Sit Ubu, sit", in a more immediate fashion.
The concept of "one whack stops" is a bunch of hooey. It's all about bat placement. :D

"Some people call 'em sling blades, I call it a Kaiser blade."

:D

Check your State laws.

In Michigan, for example, a club is an unlawful weapon (felony) even in carried for the purpose of lawful self defense That includes lengths of pipe, billy clubs, "tire checkers", or a baseball bat if carried as a club.

I think thats worth repeating again as I believe Illinois has a similar law. I'd be interested to know historically how many bats in cars its been used against though.

I heard about a guy in Detroit attacked by a guy with a bat. Turns out the assailant was Brandon Inge and during the 5 minute attack, nobody was hit. Go Tigers!

Can't forget the most important thing: The will to use whatever tool you haveat hand to win. I recall a story in the news down here over ten years ago wher a guy was leaving Pizza Hut with dinner for his family. A group of four or five punks started getting mouthy towards him, just for no apparant reason other than to have fun. He got a fishing billy out of his truck with the idea that a show of force would make them back down. If you've never seen an aluminum fishing billy, just imagine an aluminum baseball bat 18" long, with a thong around the right end. Some of them are also weighted out on the wrong end.

The story ends with the punks killing the guy with his own weapon. IIRC, they never got caught, either.

The most dangerous weapon you own sits between your ears.

It's about will - the will to win at all costs. When faced with a situation where the chances of living or dying are 50/50, approach the contest prepared to die, and you will almost always win because your adversary is rarely willing to die.

Bottom line - what's it worth to you?

Bahh!!! It's the size and speed of the bat that makes the difference!!!
If you have a really big and fast bat, if you happen to score a glancing blow it will still knock the opponent down right?:D

Gotta agree with Deanimator. Buddy from work does kendo and after he described Musashi to me, I was awestruck. Then I looked the guy up and was even more impressed.

Plus, kendo helped Saduharu Oh hit over 800 home runs. Not bad.

NO Movie Here

But just a few short year's ago, a middle aged man was murdered by a group
of teenage thugs weilding a Louisville Slugger. The gentleman was from the
Pleasant Grove suburb of Birmingham, and was rushed to UAB Hospital down
town whereas he succumbed to his injuries. Three teens [all 18 or over]
were convicted, and each one drew a lengthy prison sentence. If memory
serves me correctly, the prosecution let one of them enter a plea bargin,
in exchange for testimony against the other's involved; so quite naturally
he didn't receive as lengthy a sentence as his cohorts~!

I seem to remember something in the newspaper back after the collapse of the USSR regarding Poland. They had some pretty serious firearms prohibitions in place, so the local gangs in the big city started killing each other off with............. baseball bats! Of course, the official response was to prohibit carry of baseball bats outside of ballparks IIRC.

Google 'baseball bat killing'. They work well if you use them right.

Several years ago a Ft.Campbell soldier killed another with a bat. Right in the middle of all the REAL weapons you could ask for and he uses a bat! They do work.

Also...when I was a teenager, (mid 60's), a police officer got all over me for carrying a 24" hickory limb in my car. Its a weapon. In Tennessee, you need a certificate (of some sort) to carry a collapsable baton. Thats what my ccw instructor told us...he did the classes for this, too.

I don't know if this has any bearing on topic or not.

Mark.

I would probably agree with Jim March on the use of a cricket bat because I play cricket myself. It all depends what you are comfortable with. If one plays hockey, they might even go for the hockey stick.

Just remember you only get one good swing with a bat before the BG can probably grab you, grab it etc. So it needs to be a good one. I'd rather have something lighter and thinner that I can return to hitting position faster.

I think any blunt weapon is better than nothing. Having played both hockey and baseball, the objects can do a lot of damage before breaking.

Grab a speeding bat? You're welcome to try. Don't use your shooting hand.

The big advantage to a bat is range. If you give that up, your loss.

As for lighter and thinner, you'll do less damage on impact. But they do move faster. I went into a Modell's yesterday and saw that they're now selling official 'stickball bats' for $10ish. Still pretty hurtful, and a lot lighter. It's a delicate balance.
