Bayonet

Combat troops do sometimes need a sharp, but the important thing is instant access, not size. I saw a Soldier barely miss serious injury because we couldn't cut gear loose in time.

The Samish knife was one of my go-to knives for a fast access knife. I typically had it mounted blade up, on the shoulder strap of my ALICE gear (when I started) and my ACUPAT FLIC later. It has a standard belt clip but also a screw to really hold onto something when needed. I took it on a few air assault jumps. And it was cheap. So if it ever broke (which it didn't) it would have been easy enough to replace. Much lighter and handier than a bayonet.

In my career, I had a knife on the end of my rifle twice. Once in basic when we did bayonet training, and at the end of basic for graduation. Although I did see the Rangers had fixed bayonets when they assaulted the commandancia during Just Cause, but we are talking about the Rangers (bless their hearts). I see little application for the bayonet today, except maybe as an "intimidation factor" for the national guard during civil unrest type of ops.
