Has anyone bought and installed a Cabelas Bell & Carlson stock on a Savage 10FP Tactic? i recently went to the New opening of the PA Cabelas store (awesome awe inspring store by the way) And I had the opportunity to hold one of the B&C stocks. I have been wanting to put a new stock onto the savage and it is defenitly in my price range and I liked the stock a lot. I just need to know now whether or not it is the right one.

Nothing I hate more than a do gooder out to save you from yourself is to mail order something only not have it be what fits.:banghead:

there have been a number of reports of fit problems with them. (rear of inlet and an uneven/crooked recoil lug cut-out seem to have been teh issues)

personally i'd choose the Stockade brand that Lock Stock adn barrel and Sharp shooter's Supply sell. this is esp true if you happen to have an accu-trigger model.

do a search on them there have been a number of post int eh past two months regarding these (the B&C duramax).

What he said. Do a search.

I have one. Needed to do some minor inletting, no biggie. Great stock, esp. for the $$$.

The problem comes from the little gizmo that is the Accu-trigger. Old 10fp didn't have it, so the B&C stock doesn't have room for it. Dremel.

Too much stock material behind the recoil lug pushes the barrel towards one side of the barrel channel. Dremelled out some material from there as well (too much, in my case, had to fill it with acraglas), and sanded out the barrel channel a bit.

That's about it. Oh, yeah. Drill hole for rear trigger guard screw. Ho hum.

Someone should notify B&C about the new Savage designs. Again.

For $90, the Duramaxx is a good stock to replace the factory onr. If you plan on getting keeping this stock for a long time, go with the Sharpshooter stock. It's about $240.

If you do get the Duramaxx:

1. You need to inlet the action channel for the Accutrigger mechanism. This is pretty easy. I used a .45ACP case to compare depth with the inlet in the factory stock as I drilled out an inlet in the Duramaxx.

2. You need to drill the rear trigger guard screw. Simple.

3. If the barrel does not line up evenly in the barrel channel and appears to be more right than left, or vice-versa, you need to take material from inside the stock where the recoil lug is located. Most of the offset barrels being reported are going towards the right (mine did). I simply used a rat tail file and shaved some material from the inside left wall of the stock near the bottom where the recoil lug sits. You don't need to take much off. Keep reassembling the rifle during this process to check the progress.

Good luck in your decision.

From a prior thread:

I called bell and carlson and spoke to their technical assistance guy.

The problem is not at the back of the action, its the fit of the recoil lug in the stock, a little bit of material needs to be removed from the left side of the slot, the lug sits in.

B&C is machining the slot a little too small in width right to left, so the left side of the lug is hitting and pushing the barrel to the right. B&C says that this is because of some varriance of the lugs position when savage installs the barrel and barrel nut, the lug sits slightly to the left, causing the entire barrel and action to be canted to the right in the stock.

I will fix mine to night with a small woodworking gouge, and chisel.

My prior fix had helped a little but the barrel was not perfectly centered so I called B&C.

Dont sand out the barrel channel!!!!!!

By the way I fixed it it was easy but not obvious. The problem is not the stock, but the installation of the barrel nut and of the recoil lug mine was slightly canted sticking out more on the left side of the action/ barrel. You can feel it when you run your finger down the side. The stock is cut very tight to the action so this reults in the canting of the barrel and action. I like my B& C stock very stiff and looks and feels nice. The higher comb places my eye right in front of the scope, The pachmeyer decelorator pad is great as well. The rear trigger guard screw is no problem, drill a pilot hole, just like the original stock using the trigger guard as a guide for the mark you make for your drill bit.

I considered the choate stock, but it would add three pounds to the weight of the rifle which is already heavy enough (26" bull barrell!)

UPDATE!! UPDATE!! UPDATE!!

My buddy just bought a B&C stock from Cabela's for his Savage 10FP. It is now inlet for the Accu-trigger mechanism. No need to drill/dremel out rear section behind trigger.

Still need to file area behind recoil lug, still need to drill pilot hole for rear trigger guard screw.

Somebody at B&C is paying attention. Good job, fellas. ;) :)
