Beretta 92 or HK 9mm for BEATER gun?

This is the gun that goes on kayaking trips, hiking and where legally permissable, camping.

Which would you pick, and why? Would be carried with lanyard loop, IWB in nylon holster with thumbreak for retention, water resistance, and to keep out of sight of sheepish but otherwise cute & cuddly fellow churchgoers.

Beretta would be fullsize as I already have one, and don't care for the compact or Cougars, but I would get another one because I don't want to scratch my carbon fiber grips. HK could be the 9F, 9C or P2000. I am NOT losing my P7M8!!!
 
Glock 19, purchased very used (preferably a factory refurb), with two pre-ban 15 rd magazines. Why bang up a nice Beretta or USP when you can smack around a Glock? And they can fire underwater! (cough, cough)

But seriously, that's what I would recommend. I'd worry about my Beretta rusting, and USPs seem to be so much more expensive. Not to mention the Glock would probably weigh less and conceal better.

Pack both. You never know what might happen on outing with "cute n' cuddly" churchgoers !!:D

This is a good excuse to get an even smaller (size wise) handgun to add to you Tactical collection.

Such as a *ahem* Glock 26 or 27... Or a Kahr perhaps ?! :)
 
If that's your choices, I guess the USP will get knocked around and rained on more happily of the two. But calling either "beater" is tough.

Various wholesalers are offering Very Good used Sigs for less $400. How about a 226 (Since it is so similar to the other two)? That would be a trusty weapon that has already taken a bump or two..

Obviously, this could devolve quickly into a brand naming game, since there are a ton of good, tough 9mms out there for decent prices. (Even if limited to DA/SA full size only.) So why those two?
 
Now that I think about it, a Compact HK P2000 would be perfect for what you need.. The only problem is getting one.

Ruger P95.

I bought one a few years ago and haven't had any problems with it.

Great gun at a great price.

OH yea, 15 round stainless mags sell for around $15 from CDNN.

Would have to agree that Glock or Ruger would be cheaper & better choice for "beater" gun.

Why not your P7M8? It already comes with a lanyard hole. The metal is incredibly hard (you could hardchrome) and is really compact & accurate. (Might sink you like an anchor if you kayak though).

Perhaps it's time for you to consider adding a SS revolver to your "Tactical" collection.

Though it's got what it takes to breeze thru abuse from nature, even if you intend to go hiking/camping in the Himalayas! :D:D:D

I'd suggest the inexpensive HS2000 (XD). G-19 sized, SA-like trigger, and I've read somewhere that it accepts Beretta mags. At least you wouldn't be scrounging for proprietary hi-caps. You do have hicap Beretta mags?

Search GUN LIST for a police trade in BERETTA 92. You aleady "know" the 92, you've got hi caps...its a good gun, whats not to love.

I saw some in great mechanical shape, with alot of carry wear the other day for $350.
 
I would go with the HK. The versatility of the Variant One would be great for an everything gun. I've shot a fellow THR member's USP 40 a good bit and I like it MUCH better than the Beretta 92/96 series. Just because you're going to beat on it, that doesn't mean you shouldn't spend some cash on it. Guns are meant to be used. Spend cash, use, smile. Good luck with the ladies BTW :)
 
Get a police trade in 92fs! You have the most trigger time on the 92fs and probably won't have to buy many new accessories :cool:
 
That's a tough call, Skunk. I have both the 92FS and HKUSP 9mm. The HK is lighter and might be more weather-resistant than the Beretta. The 92 is a more enjoyable shooter and fits my hand like a glove. The HK has its own idiosyncrasies, and yet is just as reliable, if not more accurate, than the 92. I would recommend the HK for your first camping trip. On your second camping trip take the 92; then you would be able to assess the pros and cons of each gun under similar conditions.
 
Beretta and HK are not "beater" gun's in my economic class but hey, more power to ya:cool:

I think of Rugers in that role but Handy makes a great point about buying quality used police surplus with a few dings it was gonna get anyway.
 
Get the cheapest, nastiest looking 92fs you can find. The get it re-finished (2 tone of course), new springs and maybe a new lock block and you're set. ;)
 
I vote Beretta 92fs with NS. There are still plenty of hi-caps for cheap and it is a nice shooting gun. It will most likly be less money than the H&K also.

I personally can't imagine tucking either a Beretta or a H&K in my wasteband while I was on a camping trip. Are you going to be hiking and running around or is it a sit by the campfire and roast marshmello type of thing?

My pick (which I know you didn't ask for) would be my Ruger P95 9mm. It is cheap, light, accurate, reliable and tough as any gun out there. I still need some factory hi caps for it though. Carrying only 10 in the mag keeps the weight down though.:D
 
Just some other points to consider.

I don't kayak, but I do put in lots of miles with a pack. If you're going to be hiking and use a hip belt to distribute the load, you don't want to carry IWB. I have found some great stash points on my pack for my USPc. Under the lid is my favorite. I can reach up, slip my hand under the pack lid and pull the pistol from it's nylon holster fastened to the top compression strap almost as fast as drawing from a fanny pack. BTW. If you are doing outdoors activities, a fanny pack is a great way to pack--it fits right in. Several of the trendy mountainsmith brand packs can be adapted easily to carry a hoster. Think of it as REI camo.

As for the gun, The USP! Better corosion resistance, lighter weight, smaller package--all good things when outdoors.

ps When in bear country I carry a ruger .45 bisley loaded heavy.

If you want to carry a 92fs IWB, then go right ahead.

The USP is the way I'd go, both due to the IWB requirement and due to its overall scratch & ding resistance.
