yes. the frames are identical, so you can interchange the uppers as you wish. your best bet is the Beretta Forum (google it, and you should find it). They constantly have uppers with barrels for sale for this purporse, and sometimes gunbroker has some too.
Thats not entirely true, the 92 and 96 frames are NOT identical. The feed ramp cutout is considerably larger on the 96 for the larger dia 40 S&W bullet. Also the ejector is shorter. As VHinch noted you can easily put a 92 top end on a 96 frame, but a 96 top end on a 92 frame MAY have issues. YMMV
have done both ways, no harm, no jams, no misfeed ftf etc.
But the 40 shells fly at 3:00 instead of the usual 5:00
the 9mms on the 40 frame eject around 4:30
