I see Beretta markets their 9mm autoloaders under both the 92FS and M9 labels. Is there anything specifically that differentiates the government issue M9 from the 92FS?

Also, do the Beretta 92/M9 take well to trigger jobs, or is the buyer stuck with the typical heavy service pistol trigger?

As far as I can tell they are the same gun. I think it is just an advertising gimmick to remind people that this is the official military service pistol. Not that, that is really a bad thing. I currently have one and think it is a great gun. A little big so it is really just a range toy for me but has been perfect. I have owned and shot others before and it seems the trigger quality is inconsistent. The current one I have has an excellent trigger from the factory but others I have owned and shot were not so good. I'm sure it can be worked on but have no idea how hard it would be or what type of results to expect.

Should you wish to search for "M9 92fs" you'll find another half-dozen threads on this topic from 2003 to as recently as last month.

The most readily visible difference is that current production 92fs pistols have a slanted dust cover. Upon closer inspection, one will also find that the 92fs has more plastic parts, or plastic coated metal parts. These parts include the trigger, safety lever, and guide rod. However, as of 2007, M9s are now going to units with the plastic parts.
