Hey everyone was wondering if those berrys boxes were any good, I currently use mtm boxes cause I like that it actually has a hinge. Does berrys have that hinge or is it just the lapped plastic type?
Personally I would use the Dillon Boxes. They are not hinged, but are very tuff, and cheaper than the Berry's boxes. I have 10 Dillon boxes, but find myself using the store brand 1 quart Ziplock containers from my local grocery store. They cost $2.99 for a pack of 5.
I have both the Dillons and the Berry's. The Dillons seem to be stronger but time will tell over the long haul. I do like fact I can look in to the Berry's though.
I just picked up a few Franford boxes. They feel much thicker than the Berrys. If I could find the Berrys I would grab them, but everyone has cleared out my Sportsmans Warehouse.
I have and use Berry, MTM, Plano, Herters and Flambeau. The Herters and Flambeau and by far the most sturdy. I think you could drive over them with a truck without damage. They are both slip covers. Have not had problems with any of them.
I have some CaseGard I bought in the 60's. The hinge and everything else is still going strong, and they have been stored in some very hot and very cold places over the years.
I've munched a couple of berry's boxes. Shutting a SUV tailgate on them, dropping loaded boxes, etc. No prob; they're cheap. Haven't had a hinge wear out yet but I've only been using them for a couple of years. And I've probably only used the same box maybe 3-4 times.
The FA boxes are brittle.
They seem to break easier than any of the others.
The Berry's boxes seem to be a bit more malleable or softer.
The Dillon boxes cannot be seen through.
Although that same argument can be used on some MTM boxes as well.
I personally like the MTM see through boxes for .32H&R, 9mm, 38spl, 357mag & 44spl&mag.
They don't make 'em quite big enough for 45 Colt.
The rounds don't sit down in the box unless you force 'em in.
(especially the holes around the outside edges.)
See-thru is good although not an ultimate requirement for me.
As so frequently said, size matters.
The last batch of Frankfort Arsenal 223 Remington boxes were bigger than the previous one I had bought. Not a s convenient for storage. It looks like they were made taller to fit the over magazine length rounds. These tall boxes do not store as well as boxes made for the more conventional AR magazine length ammunition.
I did get some different color boxes, which was nice but last I looked--several years ago--the odd colors had been discontinued.
It has been 5-7 years since I bought any Frankfort Arsenal 223 Rem boxes though.
Purchased by the case, the price per box is pretty low and when I do break a box, not a big deal. Breakage is usually my fault, not poor service life of the product.
The Berry's boxes work and last fine, but have two things I'm not fond of.
9mm ammo fits loosely in the boxes and the solid plastic hinge is "self-closing".
When reloading at the range, an ammo box that won't stay open is a pita.
The MTM boxes with an actual plastic segmented hinge will stay open and the ammo fits the cartridge holes better.
I also like see-through and color coded boxes for different use ammo.
