Hello all, helping out a friend decide on a long range hunting rifle in 300 PRC. Don't have a fixed budget, but for the moment let's assume sub $3000, and off the shelf rifles. What are some models to look for? This will be primarily a hunting rifle, not a competition rifle, and glass will be a separate budget. What would you guys recommend?

Seekins rifles are at Europtic for $2700.

I know Christensen has a bunch of options, but I hear their QC has been rough recently.

Bergara makes some options as well

I was going to say Sako or Sauer, but I don't see any 300 options with them, only 6.5

Ive got access to Bergaras and Christensens, my buddy has Seekins but i havent shot his yet.
Ive got an S20 in 7mag, and if the .300wm was on the table id likely look at that as well.

Of what Ive tried I like my Christensens the best, but they are a 700 copy and I really like the 700.

One thing to keep an eye on is that some manufacturers are trying to run a slower twist rate than the 1:8 the caliber is designed for. It might not bother some, but a buddy of mine is having some trouble with his (212 vs 220 gr bullets…). I guess I get they don’t want to spend money but… with that budget, I’d say go for seekins…

Is he set on the 300 PRC?

I’ve been researching all the PRCs lately and the 7mm seem like the best hunter. It is a bit new though.

I have personally only shot a Winchester 1885 in 300 PRC and the recoil was substantial even in that heavier rifle. No brake though. It shot well at 100. Not sure of the rifles longer range abilities though. 1885s are not known for bughole accuracy. The gun was a cool blend of old and new.

I owned a Browning X-Bolt Hell’s Canyon LRM and I was extremely impressed with that rifle. I would still own it if not for two things. One, that 26” barrel makes for a really long and awkward rifle once you screw a suppressor on the end of it. Two, and most importantly, a good friend wanted it for an elk hunt. Offered to let him borrow it, but he wanted to buy it outright and made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.

Friend of mine just bought a Seekins Havak PH2 in .300WM and we did break-in and sighted it last weekend. He bought his on sale at Scheels, they list for $1700.

With cheap 165 Norma factory that he found on line for $22 a box it was holding right at 3/4 MOA out to 300yds. The trigger in his is a TriggerTech, which is a very, very, good trigger.

Overall a very nice rig, personally I'm not a fan of the palm swell size, but the rifle shoots and is put together well.

I'm in the process of having a trued Rem M700 re-barreled now with a 24" Bartlein 2B (300WM), TriggerTech M700 "special" and a Manners ECH3, that all together will cost me much more than the Havak PH2, to basically accomplish the same thing, while shaving a little weight.

For a 3K budget I'd look at the Seekins Havak Element, it'd be around $2700, but weigh at 6lbs in 300PRC, so around 8lbs "all up" with a 30mm tubed scope, sling & ammo.

He is very set on the 300 PRC. Has family in Idaho and Wyoming, grew up shooting distance, and wants to replace his old 300wm with something 30 cal and more modern before his other 300 is shot out. He hasn't bought a rifle in quite a while, and he just hasn't kept up with all the newer rifles out there. Kinda like me. Eventually I'll be in the same boat.

300 PRC in a Seekins Havak. The Seekins has the added advantage of their proprietary mag box with extra length to fit the long, high BC bullets into a repeater and really shine. I might be tempted, with a $3000 budget, to buy a $1700 Havak PH2 and spend the rest to upgrade to a Manners EH1a.

He could get this Browning X-Bolt for 1600 ish and then spend the rest on a decent stockpile of Lapua brass and dies and such?

Dad has used Sportsman's Supply often as they have prices that are very good and offer reasonable shipping.
