Shucks my dad got his 1911AM Remington for $17 in 1963 top that..i got it for free from him...

Didn't see many RIA GI's on GB and the one or two were more like 500 with shipping, + FFL fees. Allot of compacts for $380.

Three places to watch for new Rock Islands:

On Gunbroker, watch for Bellshire Guns/Hardware. His "Buy it now" throws in shipping costs, and you don't risk getting bumped in the bids.

www.centerfiresystems.com

Be aware: sarco may have better prices, but you may wait for weeks for your Rock. Bellshire will ship ASAP after receiving your payment - maybe even that day! Can't say about Centerfire...

I've just purchased a new RIA Tactical .45ACP. $510 OTD.

I plan to replace the grips with checkered wood and the magazine with a better quality 7 rounder.

Something to keep in mind about any GI style 1911, if you're not familiar with them, is hammer bite. When the slide slams back, it drives the hammer down and can pinch your flesh between the hammer and GS spur. This is why the RIA Tactical (or any other "improved" 1911 like the Taurus PT1911) is being recommended. A Beavertail grip safety is a wonderful thing!

Hammer bite won't kill you, but it's annoying to bleed all over your new Roscoe, and it can turn you into a flincher.

best gun for the money is going to have USED in the title.

I agree with greyling22. I have had/read too many bad experinces and reports concerning Taurus revolvers. That has made me reluctant to accept their 1911 (I concede that may be apples and oranges). Before buying a new $500 1911, I would either buy a used one or save my pennies and get one for $800. For less tha double the money, you get double the quality.

Hammer bite:

I have been shooting GI style 1911's for 30+ years. I have NEVER had a hammer bite.

You cannot assume that it will happen to you. If it does it is easy to resolve.

I agree with Loop, if you can find a Norinco it is the best value for under $500. RIA sems to have a loyal following. At one time I was a strong supporter of SA, maybe not so much now.

BUT, a Colt is the best answer! Might be something for the future, good luck on your search.

I have NEVER had a hammer bite.

My father's 1911A1 Colt never did but the first time I shot my 1927 Argentine, it drew blood. Only once though! :)

The new RIS Tactical has the beaver tail grip safety so that won't be a problem with it.

Everybody is talking...

love about the RIA but nobody is sharing the same to Charles Daly, an armscor recipient for some time and probably one the most maligned 1911 brands.

If you are considering the Rock River, you may want to check out their website. According to their website, as of Sept. 17, 2008, they are suspending the acceptance of new orders for 1911 pistols. Go to their website and look under the link "RRA Custom Pistols". I don't know what affect this will have on prices or availability, but I just thought I would pass it along.

I'm guessing you should go with RIA. It's got a following online that most cults or pop-stars would die for.

No one has stated that the RRA and RIA were one in the same. I simply wanted to inform the OP as to the status of RRA, just in case he was interested. While the two brands are generally not in the same price range, he may want to come up with a little more coin and purchase one now in the event they don't resume manufacturing. Rumor is that they will resume production, but you know how rumors go.

Springfields seem like a great value for $500

Just saw one I think it was a GI for around $469 and a mil-spec for around $550. I think they have a worksheet on their site that allows you to check whatever mods you want done to their 1911s (also one for the XDs). I tried a custom XD(m) and was impressed nice fit/finish/trigger etc. for $1300.

Check em out http://www.springfield-armory.com/custom.php

Sorry. I'm not giving any of my money to or trusting anything that says China on it even though they are undoubtedly top of the line for there class. I have a sub conscious fear that they have a built in design flaw for the firing pin or something to break right when i need it the most to sabotage me. I am likely going to go with a RIA(korea/phillipeans?) or the Kahr Auto-Ord. because its made in the good ole U.S. of A. Wouldn't say no to a Springfield if i find one locally,GI or Mil-Spec sub $525 out the door, but im not paying shipping and transfer fees. Thanks guys

Adam,

Say it isn't so!

You would prefer a Filipino cast and mim gun over a forged frame and slide that is Chinese?

Or a gun from a company owned by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon over a Chinese gun?

Or a Brazilian out-of-spec imitation of a GI gun over an in spec gun from China?

That just doesn't make sense.

The Norinco 1911s haven't been imported for 15 years so they are not easy to find.
