Best action to Build a custom rifle on

I cast my lot to be a remington 700 action.

Kinda depends on the purpose of your custom rifle, imo. It also depends on how much $$$ you want to blow.

I picked the Winchester Model 70 simply because that's what I like and have my custom rifles built on. However, from a gunsmith's point of view, the Remington Model 700 is easier to work on.

Of those listed I picked the 98. My list would of included the '09 Argentinian tho.

Really depends on the use. If you decide to go with a Remington 700-type, look at Jerry Stiller's new Predator model. Essentially identical to the 700, with better quality control - no need for truing, etc. You can find him at benchrest.com.

Now, that's assuming it's a hunting rifle. If you're looking for a varmint gun, I'd probably go with a Kelbly Grizzly II action, and if you're looking for long range, I'd probably pick a McMillan...

I picked the '98 because that was the basis for my last custom rifle. A sweet little 7 X 57 built on a Nazi 1942 DOT (CZ) action sitting in an Australian walnut stock with a left handed cheek piece.

My other custom rifle built by Dan Dowling is a Remington 700 action with a Schneider SS barrel in .340 Weatherby.

Which one is "best"? They both are.

I voted for the Remington 700 over the Mauser or CZ because of it's faster lock time.

I thought the CZ was a Mauser action, it sure looks like it.

Depends on the intended purpose of the rifle, but I would put Surgeon near the top of the list.

I'm thinking my dovetail lugged Husqvarna 30-06 would like to wear a nice 6.5x55 tube and a nice classic stock with bedding block. Someday.

What's the intended use for the rifle? I think Nesika Bay builds the best action money can buy, unfortunately - it takes a lot of money to buy one.

Remmy 700 offers the most options....but I don't consider it the best at least not best if you factor in cost/ease.

The Savage 10/12 is a better choice, at least it was for me as a do-it-yourselfer. For one, Savage is cheaper, has a better trigger from the factory, and changing calibers and barrels can be done in 15 minutes with 2 cheap tools, which is a tremendous advantage over nearly every other bolt action out there.

My custom 12 cost less than most stock 700's, which it will outshoot and is exactly how I want it. I don't have $800 in the entire rig, and it's a 1/4 MOA gun if I'm on my game.

First, look what is available in the aftermarket, such as triggers, barrels, and stocks.

If you peruse the pages of Brownell's you will notice that the majority of offerings are for the Remington 700 and Mauser M98. I can tell you from personal experience that the Browning A-Bolt is not well supported by the aftermarket industry.

What it all boils down to is how much $$$ you are willing to pony up for your project.

im having the itch to pick up another beatup mosin and sporterize it, dunno why, maybe because the availability of the intial rifle and the price has something to do with it, the surplus ammo too is the same way, just my 2 cents

I voted M70. Had to give this a little thought as a 98 Mauser came in a very close second. For a varmit rifle I would give the 700 some consideration........ Essex County

I had a rifle built on a Remington 721 action, which I'd assume is pretty close to a 700, and it shoots just fine...

Havent modified mine at all, but a Swiss K-31 would probly work out well ,with the staright-pull action and it's legendary accuracy. All at the cost of a unique $90 milsurp gun.

While I own a mauser, my vote goes to remington. Remington has lots of readily available aftermarket parts, readily available ammo, and superb accuracy. Mausers on the other hand are very sturdy, but obviously they are not tack drivers.

I'm using a Chuck Daly 98 Mauser action for my .338-06 AI project.

The ultimate liteweight Mauser action is the G-33/40, but good luck trying to find one. If you want to go first class, get a 98/29 Persian mauser barreled action from Samco. These are breathtakeingly beautiful, and wonderfully strong. Close behind the 98/29 is the Vz.24, if you get one that`s in good shape. K-98k`s make great rifles, but the latter the year, the lesser the fit and finish. The `09 Argentinian`s are sweet, but I wouldn`t use one for a high pressure round, I`ve been told some are a little soft for magnums. Regards

It depends. Personally - if I were building my idea of the ultimate hunting rifle, I would take a LH Winchester M70 action.

For an UL rifle, I'd pick a LH Short Action Remington M700.
