Best bang for the buck firearm? Ones you own or have shot.

Hehe I remember the gripe post a few days ago complaining about listing good deals without saying when you bought it...

Yeah, that'd be ME up on that soapbox!

So... In 2007 I bought a CZ-52 from a friend for the princely sum of (Damn, TinyGnat, what was it, $120???). I have had more fun with that pistol than almost anything else I own.

Used .22 rifles

These can often be found for a very low price in gun shops. I ran into an inexpensive Savage bolt action not long ago in my local shop. It was probably made in the 1950s, with a very nice original finish on metal and wood. It feels great in my hands, the 24" barrel makes it quiet with CCI Long CB Caps, and it's a tack driver, even with the original iron sights.

When taken apart, I find no plastic anywhere! It's an inexpensive gun, so the "end cap" on the forearm is just painted on, but so what? It'll probably be going strong 50 years from now, after I'm probably gone.

I plan to use it to introduce some new shooters to shooting. It's hard to wear out a good .22LR, and there are a lot of old ones needing good homes. :)

Regards,
Dirty Bob

gently used Marlin 60s and Rem 870s
+1, would also add Mossberg 500's, +1 to the Highpoint carbines for just the average best bang for the buck.

Now specifics, back this spring got a nice used Browning BLR81 in 308 for about $450. Last fall got a nice almost new Mossberb persuader 12ga for $185. Also got a pair of Mossberg 30-06's with scopes for $500 for the pair back in the spring. They are fine shooting guns for the money. To many good deals not ever enough money! :(

Yes I should not have left off the Mossy 500. Years ago in a moment of stupidity I sold a spotless 500 with 3 barrels and a soft padded case for $175.

AAAARRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the great replies everyone!

The Mosins and the K31's are two choices that I can readily agree with. I own one of each and they both consistently end up in the rotation of range trip guns. The K31 in particular has become my precision rifle of choice. Two weeks ago I shot a .324" group with my handloads at 100 yards. I have less than $250.00 invested in that rifle, that covers the rifle, the scope, and the scope mount, it shoots so well I can hardly believe it.

I can also agree VERY strongly agree with the Llama 1911 clones being a good bargain. The second handgun I ever purchased was a gorgeous blued Llama 1911 in 9MM. I bought that pistol 14 years ago and paid $200.00 for it. I still have it today. It is accurate, pretty, reliable, heck I just love it!

As others have already mentioned Marlin Model 60's are another one that is completely underrated. The very FIRST firearm I ever owned was a Model 60. It was a Christmas gift from my parents when I was 15. This Christmas will make 19 years since I unwrapped that Model 60. I still love it just as much today as I did on that Christmas morning. For a lot of years I kept track of how many rounds I put through that rifle. I stopped at 30K, and that was 8 years ago!!!! Two years ago the bolt hold open broke. I bought the replacement parts but haven't put them in yet. I think maybe I'll fix it soon and start shooting it again.

Maybe .22 rifles are the best bang for the buck? Who knows!

Keep 'em coming everyone.

+1 on the Makarov, however they are no longer inexpensive. They aren't particularly attractive pistols, but they are superbly reliable with even the absolute worst ammo--and they used to cost ~$150.

I still see them around for under $200.

That said, I bought my Bulgarian unissued for $125. :)

My first gun was a savage 64 in .22over.410. I could take that out in the woods with a box of .22 and two more boxes of .45colt and .410. there wasn't much I couldn't shoot.

My best value guns have been a couple of single shot shotguns bought this past year.

First is a .410 H&R Topper bought brand new for $110.00. My son (12) and I have had more fun with that gun than I remember any other gun being.

I just recently bought a Remington (Baikal) 20ga. single shot for $99.00. Haven't shot it yet but I have high hopes for it to be as much fun as the H&R.

CMP service grade M1- $595, in great shape and costs in inflation corrected dollars a bit less than the US Gov. paid for them new.

paid $250 for my Russian SKS about 5 years ago. It's been very accurate and has taken several deer. I just recently gave it a complete refinish.

bought a pair of WW2 era German 98k's at a yard sale for $185 about 7 years ago. Traded one for a 1911, and gave the other to my dad for christmas.

Any S&W revolver with surface dings, heavy holster wear or finger print rust spots.
I have several ugly K frames that shoot and cycle fine but were priced way low because of the cosmetic issues.
One is A 8 3/8 Model 14 I bought for less then $200.00 its fun to shoot bulleye with, finger prints, dings and all.

Hmmmm

In the New category:

The Maverick 88 pump I bought in 1990 for $106...have put just as much game on the table with it as my brothers with their more expensive 870/1100 Remingtons.

Mil-Surp category:

M-44 Mosin-Nagant. Lotza 'thump' on both ends, and with the "right" ammo (or perhaps the wrong ammo  ) a free fireworks show, complete with louden-booming. (I have shot mine a few times near dusky-dark, and with certain ammo, it shames my .50 Flintlock)

New, but don't own yet:

Hi-Point carbines. MSRP under $250 for most of them. Goes Bang! on request every time, or Hi-Point fixes it free. And you get a free lesson in "how to love the less than highly polished guns"

Any of the used, shooter grade P&R S&W revolvers to be found, oh, most anywhere...

$149.95 Yugo SKS - literally brand friggin new underneath all that cosmoline. If this thing had more than a round or two fired out of it, I'd eat my hat...

Any gun that shoots safely regardless of how accurate is worth $40 in my opinion. It is worth $40 even if I personally don't want it.

Two years ago, a friend called and asked me how much some guns were worth: One was a AR-7 .22 rifle and the other was the Taraus knockoff of the Beretta military pistol. I told my friend my thoughts...I personally don't want either gun but they ought to be worth $40. My friend said, that he thought they were worth much more and I asked him if he really wanted to own them. He replied that he prefered a little higher grade of guns. So offer the guy that wants to sell them to you $40, they gotta be worth that if they shoot. The 9mm pistol can be traded for something you want and the AR-7 is easy to keep in the trunk of your car, and fun to shoot cans with. Two weeks later I got a UPS package from my friend. I received the Taraus pistol with 15 and 20 round mags, a pistol case and a set of Beratta grips. I got the gun for free. My friend told the seller that because the pistol had the wrong grips he would have to have it checked by a gunsmith and could only pay $75 for both guns. He shot and liked the AR-7 and sent me the pistol. I will never get rid of my free $40 gun, it shoots just fine and the price was right. Yes, he ran the numbers through a friend at the Sheriffs Office and the guns were not reported stolen. We ran the numbers again 3 mos later and still were not reported stolen.

Bargains are in the eye of the beholder. C&R guns are hard to beat as bargains.

Personally, I think a K31 for $150 delivered is unbeatable.

As is a CZ82 delivered for $215 or whatever it was.

Or an SKS for $89 because some soldier whittled a design into the stock who knows how long ago (which is why I bought it).

A few years ago I bought a bolt action 12 gauge for $20 from a fellow I knew who no longer wanted it. Have yet to shoot it.

Swiss K-31's I purchased two years ago for $70 & 80 each ( bought several at this price) Ammo is a little expensive, but price and quality of rifles more than make up for it.

CZ-82 is a great deal I got at the last gunshow for $200 (with holster, two mags, etc). I gotta say its the best valued (practical) handgun I've seen/shot in quite a while. The trigger is amazing, the recoil very manageable, and it absolutely loves the cheapest makarov ammo out there (wolf anyone?) Having also shot a CZ-75B, the CZ definitely have some of the best value out there.

I always thought that Marlins are a good bang for the dollar. Can pick up a old 22 or 3030 for a good price and they are fine shooting guns. Years back you could get a 39A for a good deal (thats changed now) and it is a great gun.
