hey guys just need some input on experiences with the best factory loads for my AR15 with 16" 1:8 twist stainless steel barrel?? ive been using olin M855 62gr, 55gr PMC,and 62gr silver bear.. with the best being the M855 with 3/4" groups at 100 yards....im using the SILVER BEAR for plinking, target shooting, M855 for coyote, and the PMC for self/home defense....any input is appreciated...i have never used any ammo over 62 grains...so let me know if heavier would be the way to go? thanks

.75" groups at 100 yards with M855 is pretty exceptional. I'm guessing those are 3-shot groups?

Anyway, match quality ammo with the 68-77gr match type bullets is likely to produce the best accuracy with a 1:8 barrel. Lighter match bullets might work well also.

don't discount light bullets offhand

IME it's a myth that fast twists are only suited to heavy bullets. While it's true that a fast twist is better suited to heavy projectiles it DOES NOT mean that it still won't shoot light bullets with exceptional results.

Some of the best 223 groups Ive ever laid down were using 45g bullets in a 26" 1/9 twist savage FLV barrel

In short the only correct answer here is the same answer that's correct for ALL such "what ammo is best" threads. Whatever load shoots best in YOUR gun

krochus that is very true..i guess my RRA just doesnt like the 45s...but the PMC 55grain ive had no problems droppin coyotes at 80 yards dead center....thanks everyone...but if anyone has had like 1/2" groups out of a 16" stainless heavy barrel please let me know what weight and brand you are using(no handloads) krochus what brand of 45s were talkin about?? i might have to give them a try

Federal Gold Medal Match 77grain produced this 5 shot factory test target.

55 grain Black Hills produced the 5 and 10 shot groups with the same rifle (LaRue OBR 5.56 with 18" barrel, Wylde chamber and 1:8 twist. This was my zeroing target/first range trip with it. I posted a review with more info on here a week or two ago.

I have a 1/8 twist on my AR and the best I have had is 69 grain. I haven't had time to experiment a lot but the heavier the better. I have heard the 77 grains are also good.

For factory, Federal Gold Medal Match. I've never seen a rifle not at least shoot well with these.
