who's that guy? never seen him before. must have been fired by the old tall ugly guy. :D

haha! welcome to THR!

The most under-appreciated gunstores in Austin are the Cash America pawn shops. Set up a circuit of visting 4 or 5 in a given day or week. With a regular circuit you are bound to come across some great bargains. You will probably have better luck buy working North/West Austin. I have seen a Benelli Legacy for $700 ($1,200 new), Citori O/U 20 ga for $800 ($1,200 - $1,300 new), CZ-85 for $225 (after bargaining), Benelli Super 90 for $450, and other good deals too.

McBrides often has good deals on used guns that are in new condition.

Be patient, be regular, and get know the staff, and get to know the character of the store. Some just seem to attract good deals.

Welcome to Austin. PS there is a steel shoot challenge in Bulverde on Sunday, 06/12/2005. Buzzer sounds at 10 AM. New shooter (to the match) orientation at 9 AM.

Well I didnt have much luck with pawn shops this weekend :( I guess I picked all the bad ones. I saw one nice 3" colt but it was $800. Am I being unrealistic in looking for a 3" .357 in 95%+ condition? I guess they all get snapped up pretty quick, right?

Well, there is a Saxet show this weekend, so maybe you can find something interesting there. There is a deal to be had occasionally.

You could always buy an AR from Steve. :)

I'd love to go this weekend, and then I realised I'll be out of town. Maybe I'll look around on my travels :)
I need to spend a little more time talking mrs ch into an AR!

FYI, I purchased a new Taurus .357 from Sportsman's warehouse recently. I bought the 2 inch blued 605, cost was $265 with tax pushing it to around $280ish out the door. The had several .357 Stainless S&W in stock. Not sure of barrel length, but the selection was pretty good.

i got almost the whole way to the end of this thread before realizing it was from 2005. does cost +10% still exist? i went looking for them once when i saw the listing in the phone book, and i couldn't find the store for the life of me. i drove back and forth and that address just didn't seem to exist. is it gone now?

Hi, I stumbled across this thread, and had a similar question:

Which of these stores is best for a first-timer (someone with no experience with guns?)

Red's north has been good about answering questions in my experience. When I bought my 556 I didn't know too much about AR style rifles and they took the time to explain things without pushing the more expensive weapons - they just gave me pros and cons and let me decide what worked for me. I also shoot there at least once a week now.

I've been to McBride's a couple times recently and they never bothered to help me either time. I took my $$$ elsewhere. If you know what you want, I've also had good luck with the Ceder Park, Round Rock and St. Johns area Academies. They've all been friendly but some staff are more knowledgable than others.

Thanks for the advice. I looked up the location of the north Red's and unfortunately it's not located within a reasonable distance of any bus stops (I don't have a car).

I'll probably visit the south Red's, although I've read the service is not as friendly towards newcomers. I also visited McBride's and was largely ignored, which is why I posted here.

Thanks again :)

No, the owner shut down a couple of years ago, very sadly. He was a great guy, and I loved browsing around his cluttered, dusty shop. It was like crawling around in grandpa's attick. You never knew what treasure you'd stumble onto. I ordered a couple of guns from him. He was great to do business with.

to G27RR- since the election McBrides has been stupid busy; it's slowed down alot, but on Fridays they get slammed. Try going early (they open at 9); they're usually kept busy by the lunch crowd.

The guys there are very helpful when they aren't selling $1500 shotguns to guys with cash money. George in the upstairs reloading section will talk with you as long as he has time.

As to looking for used gun bargins, I've seen a ton of em there (espically auto pistols); just like hunting, you have to keep looking & be paitent.

Since Sportsman Whse closed, alot of folks automaticly go to Cabelas; I can't get there as often as I like, but from the past 5 visits in the last 1.5 years their bargins buys on used guns are totally gone.

just my 2 cents

Hi All,

I am new here but have a question about rifles in austin area. I was wondering if there are any Savage Model 99's around? What shops might have one? Is there any shop that might have more older rifles than other shops? Thanks for any help.

I usually purchase my guns from Mcbrides. I did buy a Marlin 336 from Academy because the price was right. I buy all my target ammunition from Academy. I buy my SD ammo from Cabelas. I can always find Buffalo bore at Cabelas. I have always been helped when I go to Mcbrides.

I bought some accessories at McBride's, but I've gotten all my guns used, or at Cash America. All these posts are fairly old, and I was wondering if anyone could put up some updated lists of Austin gun shops and how good they are.

One name I've heard a few times is Desperation, but I can't find a website or any contact info on them.

No mas Guns Shows in Austin, too many politicians getting involved. The place in San Antonio, where they hold Gun shows, off Marbach Rd. is the area I lived for most of my life. I'll have to check it out but No special trip, unless I have a reason to drive 120 miles, might as well go to the big shows in Houston. They should try to find a place in Bastrop. I still do not know where these people find these deals at Pawn Shops, what little Pawn shop looking I have done wasn't worth the effort. They must be desperate for a gun or have know idea of the competitive going prices. Granted you may not have to pay shipping. Note the date the thread topic started. Lots has changed in the Austin area since then.
Is there a pawn shop that has a decent selection of weapons, that is run by someone that knows guns? I'm out 290E in Elgin. The only place I stop by to look is John's Gun Shop on 95, just outside of Bastrop, haven't purchased from him.

Another place to check out is Austin Gun Liquidators, which is off I-35 near that Austin's Park fun center whatever you call it.

It's run by a local guy who is very friendly, does transfers for $25, carries STI, which I haven't seen elsewhere, and has a pretty good selection. They typically seem to have at least some of every caliber of ammo at decent but not amazing prices.

actually the gun show in Austin is back on. That little stunt by the Chief is over with. The show is now at the old Target building on I35 near William Cannon. I think it's the same organizer.

I went to the most recent one on May 15 and it was nice - it was fairly small but I think that's to be expected with the recent one having to shut down temporarily.

Darn. I move out of town and then the gunshow changes locations to what was my part of town. ;(

best gun stores in austin,tx

Hello everyone my first post. I have been to many of the gun shops in austin. My personal favorite is Gun-Tex, small shop great guys. If you need info on any gun thats the place, I've been to Mcbrides and Cabelas and both have sent me there. As far as pricing I find Mcbrides the cheapest. I not sure on all guns but as for CZ pistols the cheapest by far. Cabelas will price match any store thats a plus. I am shopping for a Ruger SR 556. Mcbrides $1550, Gun-Tex $1525, Cabelas $1599. So I decide to check Round Rock come to find out a little cheaper up there $1425-$1499. So off to Round Rock to check out these store. Well I hope this helps a little. Happy Shooting

McBrides is OK if you know what you want but if you are not certain, they will definitely push the most expensive model on you. Red's South may be expensive but I have always found the staff there to be knowledgeable, helpful and very straight forward. Even if you don't end up buying there, their advice will be helpful.

Also, if you are looking for something they have in their library, you can always cycle a few boxes of ammo through a rental before you decide on anything.
