My dad lives in St. Louis, and some of his friends are buying handguns for self-defense. The nearby range offers CCW class but it's quite bad, it's basically the minimum state qualification. It's no Gunsite...

Could anyone who lives nearby recommend a good defensive handgun class? A two-day is probably good enough to give them the basics.

I know about Chapman Academy, but I don't know anything about them post-Chapman.

Best Regards,

I would bite off a piece at a time. Learn gun handling, grip, trigger control, sight picture, malfunction clearing, etc first--and then do something on the "defensive" side.

The latter should address the draw, presentation, shooting fast--

Top Gun in Arnold should be able to recommend something for the former.

For the latter, see this--it's an hour or so across the river. Call Todd Manker and talk to him. He knows what he is doing.

Thanks, any idea who Todd Manker trained under? Is he orthodox ala Cooper/Taylor/Piazza, or is he more new school ala Suarez/Yeager?

Thanks,

Google "Chapman Academy" in Hallsville, MO. About halfway between Kansas City and St. Louis as I recall, and back up and running under the supervision of one of Ray Chapman's hand-picked staff members.
