A lot of people say the Garand's. But peep sights are less useful in low light than opens (the eye's pupil is 7mm, bigger than the peep). Which milsurp has the best all-around iron sights? M39? K31? Or am I just wrong and it's the Garand after all?

The Garand wins it for me. Followed closely by the #4Mk1 Enfield.
For the barrel mounted setups, the K31 gets my vote with the Nagant a close second.

Another vote for the Garand. It has the best sights of any rifle of it's time.

Now, if you *specifically* want to limit the question to the most effective sights for low-light situations, you might get a different answer. I'm not sure on that. But, for general use, the Garand wins.

For me it is a toss up with apeture rear sights....

I prefer rear apeture military sights over a notched U or V because of the easier centering of the front sight. I find it a toss up among a No. 4 Mk. I SMLE, Model of 1917 Enfield and a M-1 Garand, with the former two being close competitors for low light usage. I have examples of all three so I have hefted them one after the other to do a quick comparison.

I'm used to peep sights, so I give my vote to the Garand as well. However, I can still shoot plenty straight with M-38 Mosin Carbine.

No4 Enfield, micrometer sights. Small for precise aim, or the battle sights for fast and lo-light conditions.

The Garand wins on ergonomics, being fully rear-adjustable for windage and elevation tho.

Who uses open sights? The losing army. :neener:

Mauser K98K....they are more refined than later models. I love those sights, and this opinion isn't coming out of my butt, I've fired Garands, Enfields, Mosins, a K-31 once, you name it.

I prefere adjustable aperature sights ala the Garand also, actually I think the M1903a3 has great sights. For me,the milsurp rifles with rear leaf sights too often are hard to get a good line up for targets.

I also prefere the Garand sights for the windage adjustments. Some rifles can only be adjusted from the front sight.Anybody who saw my milsurp showdown saw that some of my rifles are way off and it will be tap with the brass punch time to get them right.

Aperture sights. You actually get windage and elevation adjustments. With a Garand you get 1MOA per click elevation or windage.

With a standard blade sight, you are restricted by the sliding rear blade and the steps it was manufacturered to. Windage wise you have to drift the front sight.

But I can shoot a blade sight just as good as an aperture (if we're talking groups), if not better. My Swede M96 will shoot groups that will clean the SR target. My only problem is having to deal with the restrictive sights. A lot of hold under or hold over depending on light conditions.

I really liked the sights on the Type 99 Arisaka, at least when using the aperture. That solid triangle front and nice round rear work very well with my eyes. You have to admire the M-28/30 sight system, which was also used on the M-39. Those extra leafs and wings serve to create a series of overlapping reference points and if used correctly can really assist in aiming. There are also two different sets of tangent notches, one on each side.
