I'm getting a new .22-250 and am new at reloading for a .22 and was wondering what you guys think is the best performing powder for this caliber. I will probably be shooting 50-55 gr. bullets.

thanks, 270

You'll get a dozen answers. None is right or wrong. I use 38.0 of H-380, 50 Nosler BT's, WW cases, Fed Match LR primers. First load I tried. Out of my 700 VS it shot a bug hole group first time out so I quit looking.

IMO, quality of the bullet is usually more important than powder in most firearms.

Varget is great for sure.H380 was devolped for the 22-250 which should be a good powder as well.i have not used it myself.Varget and 4064 worked so well I stuck with Varget if it is not broke why fix it.

Since the two biggest ones have been covered (Varget & H-380) I'll add my personal fav which is Reloder 10x. Hard to go wrong Varget or 380 though. Those are the first two always mentioned.

Being an "old timer" I'd opine for H-380 or its BR equivalent. Use it myself with success.

But chemistry and competition change the landscape. Exploring other powders in that burning rate range and configuaration isn't at all a bad idea. You may hit upon a combo that suits your particular gun even better. That's what's fun about handloading...... >MW

Pat S,

I agree with everyone that Varget is great. Others that've worked well for me with that haven't been mentioned are Reloder 15 and and Big Game from Ramshot.

IMR 4064 is really good too. I put a new scope on my .22-250 a couple days ago. I zeroed it yesterday from a sandbag and fired the group in the picture after 2 or three shots to get it on paper.

With so many accurate rifles and good components available, finding a calm day to shoot is a bigger barrier to accuracy this time of year in New Mexico.
