22-250 Powder

I switched from H380 to IMR8208xbr. That leaves me with a couple of 8 lbers to do something with.
I always tend to think of H-380 as a 22-250 only powder. If you look at the website, it works in about anything Varget or BLC2 uses. .308, .300 or .250 Savage .243. I suspect it's a little slow for .223.

Anyway, I started with H-380 and 50 grain Nosler BT's. First group was one hole. It should work as well or better with 55's. I'd use it because I got 4# at a close-out for $10/#

Well, for the most part it seems the original powder for the 22-250 just might still be the best. Unfortunately I don't have any H380 on hand but I do have H-4895, IMR-4895, IMR-4064, Varget, H-4350 and a little W760 on hand. I think I'll start with IMR-4064 while looking for H380 and maybe I can even find some CFE-223. I'm sure the 22-250 leaves a good amount of copper fouling behind at the speeds the bullet is traveling.

Thank you all very much for all the helpful suggestions! I learned a lot about 22-250 powders I didn't previously know.

After a dismal failure with Varget and my choice of the 52gr A-Max out of my Remington barreled Mauser, I tried some IMR3031 that I had, and everything went under an inch, with some 5 shot groups under a 1/2 inch. I ended up at 33.3gr of IMR3031 under the 52gr A-Max.

Back in the day, (70's) 37gr of IMR4320 was The Load under Remington's 55gr Powr-Lokt bullet, and I never saw a M700 or M788 that wouldn't group well with that load. That's now over the recommended max with a 55gr bullet, but it wasn't back then.

If I had some CFE223 or IMR8208, I might like to try them for potential.

Reloader 15 & Varget both shoot very nice groups in my 22-250 with 55 grain Berger bullets. I have just loaded up a ladder with 8028XBR, but I have not gotten to the range to test them yet.

When I was trying to find a cheap load to poke holes in coyotes without damaging the fur I found that 33gr of 4064 with the hornady 55gr fmj-bt w/c seated to the lands gave me consistent 3 shot cloverleaf groups @125 out of my rem 700 sps 22-250 and that load shoots equally well out of my friends tikka (different seating depth of course)

Richard Lee suggested in "Modern Reloading" that in general one should strive to [fill the case as full as possible with the fastest powder that will give safe pressure]. I've always remembered this advice, for some reason. Obviously there are limits, and with a 22-250 you're dealing with a substantial sized case for the caliber.
