I've got one AR that I had planned to put a red dot on when I got a chance, up to this point it just has an adjustable rear iron sight and fixed FSB front. I'm considering just keeping it this way and while there isn't anything really wrong with the rear iron I have on it, I'm thinking of possibly putting a Daniel Defense rear iron on it. I'm looking for something quality capable of being fairly precise. I also considered replacing the post with the trijicon post that just threads in place of the old...

Just kicking around ideas, what are some of the best irons, specifically rear irons to be used in conjunction with a standard FSB post..... ?

Not opposed to a carry handle either, just want a quality suggestion, don't want AIM carry handle..... thoughts...?

My money went to a standard Troy fixed. When it comes to irons + AR I mean for it to be simple, reliable, and quick so no gimmicks or precision aiming. If the sight fails in a true emergency, QR and dump it on the ground, keep firing.

I like the standard mil-spec A2 iron, which can be found in both carry handle and stand alone options. Specifically I get the carry handle version from BCM. Not all carry handles are created equal, but the ones that they provide are good quality (they should be for 100 bucks). I never use it as a carry handle, I just prefer the more robust mounting of the handle over the stand alone versions.

I also think it's cool having the BDC option, despite the fact that I will never actually get to use it since my longest range is just 200M. Lol

I've used the Magpul sights. Easy to mount and co-witness with a red dot on a high mount.
I've got Magpuls BUIS on a good number of AR's already, I like them as a back up sight, but for primary weapon sights I was thinking I'd get something better and since I'm not putting a red dot or optic I figured I could spend $100+/- on a rear sight. I'd prefer non folding, fixed rear sight.

Troy makes a good rear sight, if you don’t mind buying from them.

My SBR has a military M4 rear sight. This one came on my friend’s Colt carbine. He didn’t like it and sold it to me.

But on most of my ARs I just have the Magpul MBUS. It’s simple and it works.
Just remember, you can spend almost as much money on a high end rear sight of what a good red dot will cost.

As good as the Troy is, Id rather that it DIDN'T lock quite so securely. I gotta think that if it got whacked just right (and hard enough) it would break catastrophically and/or take a chunk of the rail with it.

At least with the Magpul BUIS, it will fold down if it contacts a hard obstacle and just spring back up.

On the other hand, I kinda hate how the Magpul presents the "fine" aperature first and you have to flip in down to get the "battle" aperature. Id rather it showed me the larger hole first.....

I have and use both, as well as standard A2 sights. They will all get the job done fine.

Can you elaborate on this? Sounds like something negative...
There are TONS of counterfeit Troys out there....about the only way to get a real set is buy em direct.

The first set I bought at a show was bogus. They looked 100% real, fake CAGE numbers and everything- but the detents were sloppy and the pins started falling out.
Only careful comparison of the lettering font finally proved they werent real.

Oh well, live and learn.....

Thanks for the heads up! I am actually looking at some Troy stuff right now.

Edit to add: After reading Gunny's post, no Troy for me. There are plenty of other options out there.

Another fan of the fixed Troy for red dot co-witness use, or for a basic KISS carbine.

EDIT: Bought my Troy before the fiasco mentioned below, which I completely forgot about.

I think it was back in 2012 that Troy hired Dale Monroe, one of the FBI HRT snipers at the Ruby Ridge murders, as an instructor. They caught a lot of flack, and lost a lot of customers, over it.
Troy stood their ground and pretty much defended Monroe’s actions at Ruby Ridge and his statement he made in court. Monroe is not the sniper that killed Vicki Weaver, that was agent Lon Horiuchi. Monroe was the spotter. In court he stated that if he had been the shooter, he also would’ve taken the shot.
The Weaver family won a $3.1 million settlement in 1995 to settle their civil suit brought against the U.S. government for wrongful deaths of Vicki Weaver.

Troy and HS Precision haven’t seen a dime of my money since they hired Dale and Lon, respectively. They may not know that, but I do.

DD 1.5 FTW.

I don't own any troy products, now I'm kind of glad I don't. What a bad decision on Troy's part.

320 million-something people in the US, and you pick those two to hire for your pro-gun (presumably) company?

Somebody was looking straight at their colon when they made that decision....

On a long enough time line, and these days that wouldn’t need to span too far back, we could throw Ruger, Springfield, Rock River, Colt, Remington, and a whole host of others under that same bus. If you wanna revisit wartime let’s add CZ, Walther, FN, Browning and Winchester by extension, Norinco, all Japanese scopes, and where does it end?

Troy made a poor hiring decision. Others worked directly with legislators to erode our 2nd Amendment. Still others created weapons en mass to kill Americans. Think about that while firing Russian ammo in your Turkish guns and let it sink in. If we believe these stains are permanent, support import bans, sell off any firearms from all of the above, and I guess start buying KelTec offerings.

Rant off.

Folding or non??

Non-Folding, take a look at Scalarworks Peak sights:

https://scalarworks.com/shop/iron-sights/peak-01/

I've got a set on my .300AAC and they're awesome. I use an absolute co-witness for this gun and once used to it it works really well. Focus on the TGT and I don't even 'see' the irons.

For Folding I really like the Magpul Pros:

To save some cash, just get a Magpul BUIS Rear.
Thanks for the link, I'm really liking these. I might have to go with a BCM carry handle for this particular AR but I might put the PEAKS set on a different rifle....
