Best rimfire for small people?

I'm only about 5' 2" and looking for a good rimfire. To be blunt, there's a cat in my yard that is threatening the baby woodchucks we have under our shed. I'm looking for something cheap but still very good. My preference is the Remington. Any suggestions?

Second the Ruger 10/22, but if you like Remington, the 597 is only a little more:

Got one sittng on My desk right now seems pretty happy to me ! Cats sleep 18 hours a day on average ! You think any animal would hunt if it didn't have to ! Mine ,we have 2 cats , are also spayed ! Ever see what rabies does to a animal it's not pretty either and there are feral cats roaming evrywhere because of irresponsible owners ! WVleo

Laura,

I bought a "pest" gun a few years ago to in case predators mess with my stock. Springfield M6 Scout. It's weird looking break-down over (.22LR) under (.410 shotgun) single shot with a funky trigger. I still like it, warts and all. The .410 bore is good for snakes and small game under 25 yards. I can bust larger critters out to 60 yards with the .22 bore loaded with CCI Stingers. It's thin, short, inexpensive, ugly, light (4lbs or so) and holds spare ammo in the stock. The .22 bore shoots .22 shorts, CB shorts, CB longs, high velocity CCI's and (my favorite) Aquilla Subsonic in .60 grain. That round would make a good "feral cat" getter out to 30 yards or so.

I hear Springfield's new carbine version m6 has a rifled under bore that shoots 45 Long Colt as well as .410 shells.

A good pepper spray that shoots a stream might work. The thread title is pretty funny, I was thinkin' "Best .22 load for midgets" :D The aguila super colibri out of a pistol is pretty darned quiet and it works !

WVleo is correct here. Cats are happy indoors, birds are happier in Cages, and Humans are happiest in prison cells.

Know your equating cats and birds to Humans ! But yes if it was up to Me I would give most serving life terms in prison the same mix of tuna and antifreeze ......................WVleo

I'm very aware that the cats belong to someone and I wouldn't go out of my way to hurt them, which is why I'm not looking to kill.
Were you just planning on winging it?
A pump up bb gun works, a smack on the butt with a bb after 2 or 3 pumps would likely sting and get the message across without penetrating.
Not true when I was much younger I shot a dog with 2 pumps and it penetrated very well if all you want to do is warn it off a Red Ryder is all that is needed
No need to kill or maim when it's not necessary.
But Bryan isn't it the ability to shoot and kill that proves us truly superior to animals and antis

Thanks for all the input. I've ordered a Super Soaker 60 water gun that I'm going to try first. My mother is leary about me using a "real gun.." God if she only knew about the seven I own already.....:)

I don't know how this thread drifted or why people feel so insistant about cats being free to get infected by other animals, ticks, and SUVs...but if you don't mind a dead cat or two -- power to you. Mine all lived till old age and were happy roaming the house -- they feared the outdoors - but then we have windows in our downstairs kitchen which is the next best thing to being outside. So I'll remain a fool and listen to my pet's doctor. She's been right so far...
