best self defense ammo?

i have a .22LR/.22MAG Heritage Rough Rider. i know a 22 isint the best for self defense but what would be the best ammo for it? im guessing hollow point, if someone can link me to ammo that would be even better thanks

Wow, a .22 and a SA! Anyway...
Look at CCI Mini Mags and CCI Stingers. Check your manual to make sure you can use high and hyper velocity ammo in your gun.

Use the 22Mag cylinder, get some CCI MaxiMag 30gr +V-TNT. Second choice: plain +V. Also worth considering: Winchester 33gr Supreme.

Suggestion:

Practice at 30'.
Use 1/2 dollar size targets.
When consistant with this size(hitting it 4 or 5 times out of 6 routinely)
move down to quarter size targets.

This will give you an idea of the accuracy of you and your weapon.

Shot placement is vital to hit something vital.

Also, I like solids for more penetration on larger masses.

Practice, practice, practice. .22 is fine for self defense. As long as you practice. The "lesser" the bullet the more you need practice.

Dare I say... there are some on this very site who could defend themselves many times better with a .22 than some others could with a 10" barrled 12GA firing 3in #4 magnums.

I agree with Old 112. With the small calibers (.22, .25, .32, .380, 9x18 Mak) you need penetration. Some of the underpowered rounds expand before hitting anything important. It's better to reach something vital with a solid, or FMJ, than a big wound channel that stops in fat or muscle. I'd go with any high-velocity solid. Find out which one(s) is more accurate out of your gun.
