I've been looking at all the different sites (AIM, JG, Centerfire, etc) for ammo to feed my incoming M91/59. From what I can tell the best out there is the Hungarian 147grn light ball at AIM Surplus. Does anyone have any experience putting this stuff down range or know of a better deal out in cyberspace?

Happy Friday :)

Haven't shot hungarian. But the light ball is definitely the way to go. I have shot Bulgarian and Russian and they both worked.

check out www.7.62x54r.net and read the ammo evals--theyre pretty in depth and handy.

Only way to know for sure what will shoot best out of any Mosin, is to experiment with different types.

Contary to most, neither of my M39's will shoot Czech stuff very well. They do much better with heavyball, Hungarian, Bulgarian, etc.

There are exceptions though as I've seen impressive groups with RussianLB 1985, and HungarianLB 1978.

Just have to shoot to find out. ;)

N4Z is correct, buy as many different types as you can find, and see what works best in your rifle.
For instance, I have one M39 that shoots Czech silver tip in shotgun patterns, and puts Albanian into 3" at 100y.
Most folks consider Czech to be really good ammo, and Albanian to be junk.
This rifle thinks differently.

Bought 5K rounds of Chinese built ammo years ago and it shoots with the best. Brass cased, cu jacketed. Have some Russian but haven't shot it yet.

The various M-N rifles can be almost as ahhhhh 'persnickety' about their ammo preferences as a lot of .22LR guns.

F'rinstance, my Romanian (1954) M-44 likes the Czech 'Silvertip' and the Albanian stuff, dislikes most others, except the Barnaul 203-Gr Soft-point "Hunting" ammo.

Your Mileage Will Vary. Buy or borrow from friends a small amount of all the different types you can find and see what works.

I like the Hungarian silvertip light ball. Czech silvertip light ball works well for me too.

I've got a bunch of Mosins, M44s, M38, 91/59s, 91/30s, M39s so these two work for me across the board.

Hungarian heavy ball was a little hit and miss for me. The silver/yellowtip stuck in the chambers a lot. Solid yellowtip worked OK.

Heavy ball prints higher though.

I've recently bought some Bulgarian heavy ball from J&G. It is 1954 vintage but spotlessly clean, and shoots great in both my 91/30 and my M44.

I bought a case from AIM about a month ago. The Hungarian stuff is realy good. It's accurate out of my M38. The stuff looked brand new.
