I know that Luke 22;36 is Jesus saying to buy a sword. "Take your purse, and your scrip, and if you have no scrip, trade your cloak for a sword", or something similar.

I recall a verse, I think also Jesus talking where his message was that if you do not defend yourself God will be displeased. Protect yourself so you can spread his word.

Can someone direct me to this verse please? I am visiting my sister the religious anti-gunner in my family, and I would like for her to see it.

Can't direct you to the scripture, but can direct you to assaultweb.net where, in general discussion, you'll get plenty of answers, and quick!!!

....seem to recall someone slew their enemy with the jawbone of an a$$....

Go to www.frontline.org.za and look for a book called "The Christian and War". I have several copies. Let me know if it looks interesting and I will send you one. Mr. KB-armed, educated, and almost Protestant.

Proverbs 24:6. For by wise counsel thou shall wage thy war and in multitude of counsel there is safety.

Old Testament is wrought with advice to slay your enemy, New Testament is where it gets tough.

The New Testament, however, does not teach passiveness.
Many view Jesus' statement about "turning the other cheek" as saying to just stand there and let someone beat the snott out of you.
Not at all.
He is literally speaking about the back-handed slap, which was more of a personal insult. It was quite common in His day. He was saying don't be provoked to violence by personal insults. Nothing in the Bible, Old or New Testament, prohibits anyone from defending themselves, families, or country. It was okay to have a "sword" but you are not to "live by the sword."

Oh, and scholars are still debating as to whether it was Brady's or Clinton's jaw bone that Sampson used.:D

Fear of the Lord prolongs life but the days of the wicked shall be short. (something like that)
If the Master of the house had know at what hour the theif would come he would be ready.

Those who beat their swords into plows will plow for those who don’t. - me :D

“And if you don’t have a sword, better sell your clothes and buy one!†- Luke 22:36

And in the bigger picture, John 15:13. Not verbatim, but man has no greater love than to lay down his life for a friend, or something like that.

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. - NIV
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends. - NKJV

Having a dad that's a preacher has it's advantages.

I'm a PK and a MB. My dad was in the Navy for 38 years (didn't make a career of it:D), 26 of which he spent as a chaplain.

No calling me a gear stalker until I break down and buy one of those silly aye-tall-yan pistols that you carry around. :D

Really needs to be read in context.

When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace; but when one stronger than he assails him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted, and divides his spoil. He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.
Luke 11:21-23 RSV

2Chr 23:10 And he set all the people, every man having his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the temple to the left side of the temple, along by the altar and the temple, by the king round about. KJV

When Nehemiah was rebuiling the walls of Jerusalem, and heard that they were going to be attacked, he ordered every man to work with his weapon at his side:
And it came to pass from that time forth, [that] the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers [were] behind all the house of Judah.
They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, [every one] with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other [hand] held a weapon.
For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and [so] builded. And he that sounded the trumpet [was] by me.
Ne. 4:16-18 KJV

-This reads a lot better in more modern translations, but the King James is all I have on this computer.-

I just read recently that when Jesus said to turn the other cheek, the original Greek was talking about being insulted, not physically attacked.
I like that idea better!

Edited to add:
I'm a PK too, but I didn't learn much about the Bible until I grew up and started studying it on my own.
My Dad was undoubtedly more wise than I gave him credit.
Wish I had paid attention sooner. :(

Revised Standard Version

mini14jac I hope this helps.

Nehemiah 4:

7 But when Sanbal'lat and Tobi'ah and the Arabs and the Ammonites and the Ash'dodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward and that the breaches were beginning to be closed, they were very angry;
8 and they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it.
9 And we prayed to our God, and set a guard as a protection against them day and night.
10 But Judah said, "The strength of the burden-bearers is failing, and there is much rubbish; we are not able to work on the wall."
11 And our enemies said, "They will not know or see till we come into the midst of them and kill them and stop the work."
12 When the Jews who lived by them came they said to us ten times, "From all the places where they live they will come up against us."
13 So in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in open places, I stationed the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
14 And I looked, and arose, and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, "Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes."
15 When our enemies heard that it was known to us and that God had frustrated their plan, we all returned to the wall, each to his work.
16 From that day on, half of my servants worked on construction, and half held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail; and the leaders stood behind all the house of Judah,
17 who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens were laden in such a way that each with one hand labored on the work and with the other held his weapon.
18 And each of the builders had his sword girded at his side while he built. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me.
19 And I said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, "The work is great and widely spread, and we are separated on the wall, far from one another.
20 In the place where you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us."
21 So we labored at the work, and half of them held the spears from the break of dawn till the stars came out.
22 I also said to the people at that time, "Let every man and his servant pass the night within Jerusalem, that they may be a guard for us by night and may labor by day."
23 So neither I nor my brethren nor my servants nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes; each kept his weapon in his hand.

Bible Verses

Greetings THR,

Being a Baptist minister I get hit with this often from believers and usually respond with some version of this posting from my site. Take bits of it as needed.

Jesus is more concerned with the heart of man than his occupation or hobby. The argument Christians have is based on the assumption that gun owners are murderous. Take away that base- guns = murder and they have nowhere to go. From that point it is just a regurgitation of stuff they have heard from the prohibitionist.

Jesus's closest disciple carried a knife and He knew it. (former fisherman and rogue Simon Peter) Jesus scolded him in the garden of Gethsemane for cutting the ear off the soldier because:

(1) He was not there to do as King David and fight (which pissed off Judas and his group that thought the Messiah was suppose to wage physical war and thus led to his disappointment and betrayal)

(2) The purpose of Jesus's life was to be sacrificed and Pete didn't get it yet.

(3) they were outnumbered and Peters actions would have gotten him (Peter) killed if he escalated/continued the fight. "live by the sword -die by sword"

Then there was a Centurian that had his child cured by his faith earlier. Jesus never told him to disarm or that he was a bad man for being a soldier.

Stuff that makes you go hmmmmm.

Why doesn't anyone ever preach this in church, you ask? Hyperthetically, if your predominantly female audience would boo you for saying it and you are not strong in your knowledge of firearms-then maybe that leader would rather appeal to the popular opinion and not look stupid. Pride and power do funky things to leaders even when they think differently in private.

Just my humble opinion.

Kenn
