You'll appreciate this, then, doc!

Took my girls out shooting a couple weekends ago. Set up our targets, my youngest starts plinking away with her .22 bolt action, and I go over the basics with my oldest daughter about her new Mossberg 500.

She loads up, chambers a round, and in 2 shots knocked over her target stand. We looked at each other with a "that sucks!" expression, because it'll be a while before the line goes cold and we can fix it.

Soooo...Daddy pulls out his M&P 15 Sport, goes over how it functions with her, explains the peep sights (which she's never used before), and said "OK, try shooting that water bottle we set up next to your target."

BLAM! Water bottle splits wide open on her first shot.

"Nice! Now try that soda can out at 30 yards."

BLAM! Soda can blows completely apart.

"You always have to shoot like this the first time I hand you something new to shoot?"

"Well, dud, Daddy!"

Meanwhile, my youngest sits there, plinking away, proving that squirrels aren't going to be safe around here, either...

They're 17 and (allllll most) 15.

That is bunch on nice guns. I have one large size handgun which is M45A1. I am glad it cured my desire for any more large handguns. I shoot with it almost as well as I did my 10mm Glocks.

Happy albeit belated 45th Birthday! Great way to celebrate it! Which one was your daughter's favorite? I found years ago a lot of new shooter really liked shooting the Browning BDA .45 (SIG P220 by another name), over that of a comparable 1911.

She had a hard time with the DA trigger of the P220 but shot it well in SA. I didn't ask which was her favorite but didn't like the Glock 30 with full power JHPs. Recoil was a bit much compared to my lightish range loads. I think judging by the giggling her favorite was the Colt SAA. She also likes the trigger on the Dan Wesson which is indeed very nice. She actually shot them all really well.

I also turned 45. Unfortunately that was about 21 years ago. :) Happy Birthday and best wishes for many, many happy returns as well as many years of enjoying your .45s.

Good to hear she had fun shooting most of your .45s. One of my favorites to take to the range is a Ruger Vaquero. Never fails to put a big smile on my face every time I shoot it.

And now you have your 50th birthday to look forward to. Plenty of time to get that Hawken muzzle-loading rifle, Desert Eagle .50AE, or Ma Deuce you've always wanted!

I'm glad you both had fun!

My daughter is 12 and has been shooting with me since she was 9. She was visiting her boy cousins out in the country this Monday. They were shooting their bb guns and laughed at her when she wanted to try. The laughter stopped when she proceeded to knock a can off the fence with every shot. :)

Happy birthday.

I have my 40th coming up, I will have to take all the 40s and 10mms out to the range and do the same thing.

Well, dah, of course women shoot well, they cheat. Every guy is born with the knowledge of how to shoot, so they never listen to instructions. Women weren't, so they cheat and listen to and follow instructions. That's the only reason they shoot better.

Happy birthday and good on you for bringing some young shooters to the range.

LOL That has been my exact experience teaching new shooters. Women generally do what you tell them and become excellent shots very quickly. Guys mostly miss a lot and act like they should know how to do it without being instructed. The ones that listen are usually excellent shots also.
