Big guns

I would suggest a .45 automatic, but this may disappoint you, as I find the .45 Auto's recoil pretty mild, more of a sharp push than a snap or hard kick. Who wants that? ;)

If the most powerful cartridge you've shot is the .357 Magnum, try a .44 Magnum. In a gun of decent weight, it is exciting but not overly punishing.

Unless you have rather large hands forget about the Desert Eagle since you say you shoot one handed. Get a full size 6 inch .44 magnum and start off with a box of .44 spl then move up to the 240 grainers. That is probably all the boom and fun you will want for the first time.

Not REALLY a big gun

While a .357 mag makes a nice Boom!, and a .44 mag an even nicer BOOM!!, and I likes me a good stout loaded .45Colt in me Ruger Bisley, a Ruger BH in .30 carbine... for the size of that skinny little cartridge... makes a CRAAACKKK!!! that is, well... ya just gotta do it to believe it and even then, for the life of me, I cannot figure out HOW or WHY that particular round creates that size fireball sounding like the Hammer of Thor itself...

But my goodness is it fun

You have been bitten by the bug!

I shoot a T/C Encore handgun in 45/70, when kept under 2000 FPS with 250 grain Barnes XXX it is a joy to shoot, push it harder than that and it bites you back....

for me personally, i think 44 mag was the limit...however, i was using a superblackhawk with a 4 5/8 barrel with a square triggerguard...this platform was very unconfortable for me...i think i would've had more fun with a bisley or a double action redhawk or super redhawk...

the comfort of the platform you are using has a lot to do with it...for example, i can shoot full house 357 magss all day in a sp101...very comfortable guns...
