Which do ya'll consider more desirable or appealing ? A stainless or black "blue" hand gun ? I know its more of a personal preference thing, but what if you had a choice of keeping, mainly for safe duty with an occasional carry. Stainless more durable, but black maybe a little more rare. I like the look of the black but think the stainless would be more valuable.

No finish can rival the beauty of an expert blue finish on a firearm.
A blue finish will hold up reasonably well unless exposed to salt-air.
Blue finishes will show holster wear over time.
A blued handgun with "correct" holster wear is the most beautiful of all handguns.

I have a bunch of black guns and stainless guns too.
Black (polymer finish) and stainless are a good choice when there is a fair chance there will be adverse conditions and rough handling.

For pistols that see actual use, stainless will still rust. It is not rustless steel. I have seen more than a few stainless guns rust when owners never put a coat of oil on after a good field outing. I have even seen the blackened S&W stainless and SIG pistols rust after the same exposure.

Stainless works great for the safe, or limited actual use. I have also seen more than a few stainless rifles that got the no protective oil treatment rust. After removal of the rust a blackish purplish 'stain' was permanently left behind. So much for stainless. A good parked finish will resist rust with a good oil better than 'stainless' steels will. Seen it enough to know. I am taliking about guns actualy USED, not safe queens or range toys that never see exposure to the elements......

Living in Florida where our humidity is allways off the scale I wouldn't have anything for frequent use that wasn't stainless. Stainless used in the manufacture of firearms is a high carbon content alloy. It has to be as carbon steel has a greater tensil strength than a stainless grade such as 304 or 316. Still with proper maintenance a stainless gun is far less likely to develope the pitting that occurs with a blued specimen.

That largely depends!

On the individual gun, that is.

For instance if my 1911 was stainless it'd look hideous, the same goes for my Glock.
But a Beretta, any Beretta to me at least looks miles better in stainless than black.

The coloring of the gun is to me at least very much dependent on the gun.

That's a tough one for me. I love the polished blue on a revolver, like you could almost reach your hand into it. It's like a piece of art.

But I like the stainless as well. I find that I don't worry about the finish as much.

I don't worry about the black coating on the CZ at all. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

i like stainless better but it must be polished. flat or brushed stainless just looks way too boring, so i like to bring it up to a near mirror shine.

My favorites are blued with a rosewood grip or stainless with a matte or bead finish. Plain stainless is pretty boring, but practical. I also prefer blue for my CCW's since they're a little less likely to be seen if I accidentally flash.

Revolvers definetly all classic blue.

Semi preference is mostly blued. But I've got a very sweet looking and shooting S&W 2206 and I find myself Jones'ing over the idea of a bead blasted and shiney combo 1911 in stainless. The sort where all the flat faces are polished or fine brushed and the rounded areas bead blasted to a silver grey. That combo looks so pimp it's almost enough to make a grown man drool.... :D
