Black Rifles: new school vs. old school

Yeah, I remembered the STG... But they never made a civvie version, did they? When were semi auto FALs available for sale commercially? Forgot about those. My first gun lust as a kid was an SAR-48.... How soon we forget. :D

Looking at the video it makes me puke seeing the modern version with all the bells and whistles. I wish companies will make the old version today. Going back in time is cool.

You have to do some puking now so that people 50 years from now will have something "old school" to look at and think is cool.

That comparison is a bit apples and oranges. If you compare a current AR-15, it's not so different from the original.

But what will be more desireable? Usually it is the things that there are fewer of. Today every dog in the joint has some AR that is all tacticool-ed up.

I think in the end it will be like it is today, those rifles are not going anywhere and when we are talking about ray guns in 50 years, the old original "slick side" AR will still have much more cool factor to it.

Sometimes less is more.

Historical military configurations will always hold interest for some. 50 years from now, the fact that the military used ARs with Acogs, Aimpoints, rails, IR lasers, flip sights, and vertical foregrips in the early part of the 21st century will not have changed.

I like (prefer) a simple rifle-length 20" A2 with a handle-mounted optic. Looks classy, and feels like a real weapon.

But I also like a quality SBR M4 setup and a good optic, which feels less like a weapon, but more like a tool to me.

Neither require more than a VFG, since I like the way it feels, but I'd be content with a plain old A2 if I could only pick one thing, and have it forever.

The original concept was simple and clean. It was also very light and ergonomic. Less is more when it comes to firearms. The more you stick on there the more stuff can get snagged or fall apart. But there's no reason you can't retrofit your modern AR with simpler furniture and fewer gewgaws.

Yeah... even Chris Costa seems to be toning it down. The last video I saw of him was him running a custom heavy barrel LaRue OBR... IIRC he just had a red dot and a hand stop on it, not much else. The hand stop looked like a glock mag finger rest or something.

Can't find the vid now; I think they pulled it.

IMO the SCAR does need something at least on the bottom rails. I may end up with a simple low-profile rail cover.

I'm just trying some stuff out to see if it's going to work for my needs. :)

FAL can not be the first one, stg 44 IMO would be the first

The StG44 is considered the first assault rifle but it's not the first black rifle. The FAL was the first to use black plastic furniture

Point of Trivia: Prototype AR-15s were produced with green furniture. The military declined that option as it was felt that the color scheme would clash with spit shined black boots and sling arms parade drill.

I've got an A1-style AR (16" pencil barrel, fixed carry handle, A1 iron sights). The first time I took it out, I was amazed to remember just how light and handy an AR could be without all the modern bells and whistles.

Still a mighty fine weapon out to 350 meters.

One could probably argue that the first "evil black rifle" was either the Thompson or the BAR....

OK back away from the AR catalog

Indeed. The SP-1 with its thin-profile barrel is a joy to run around with. Shoots pretty well, too... not that I'm that good with any rifle. Handguns I'm okay with. Rifles... not so much. I think I need glasses. :D
