It has been a LONG long time since I was able to shoot much. Way too long but today, finally, I was able to hit the range and cut loose with some 38/44's.

This is my 1939 4" customized 38/44 Heavy Duty that someone modified with target sights and non-factory grips. The gun shoots well but I had it swimming in my hand while shooting double action. At 15 yrds I should be doing better with full power 38/44 loads.

This was shot with my Glossy 38/44 Outdoorsman Postwar shooter. I bought this gun just to shoot as it has a nice wide factory trigger spur for single action and good grips for general shooting. Again, 15 yrds, 50 shots.

This was shot with my pre-war 38/44 Outdoorsman shooter. This one was refinished in 41 so collector value is shot but it was not a deep buffing and it just made the lettering a bit soft. I was having issues today with keeping a consistent grip on the magna's so I tended to scatter. Also the 38/44 rounds were hitting high so I was using some elevation estimation to get them in the black. This did not help my overall accuracy. I noted that the trigger has a slight hitch before it breaks in double action so I think a deep cleaning is in order.

I was shooting 158 grn MBC SWC's with a stout (above current book max load of SR4756. Out of the Outdoorsman's this runs right at 1175 FPS so it was a nice plinker load. I just bought 8 more pounds of 4756 to go with the 3 lbs I had left just for the 38/44 and the 38 Super.

So tomorrow or Tuesday (depending on the weather) I will head back and shoot the Colts till I shoot up the rest of the 38 specials. I have about 1000 38 specials then I can do a big reloading run of my 38/44 and 38 Specials.

My favorite load is a 158 lead SWC with XX grns of SR-4756. One thing I have learned is 4756 varies from lot to lot so I just work up to a velocity I want with each new lot.

The current lot is 7.0 grns which is one grain below Speer 8 (yes I have both editions) but above the 6.5 grns of the last lot.

These are above current book max for the 38 special but since I am loading for the 38/44 which is not an SAAMI sanctioned round I figure it is understood you are wildcatting.

Be cautious with 4756 and you will be rewarded. Be bold and there may be blood.

Iggy,

I should point out that this gun had a lot of rust in it. I normally pull the grips off any new to me 38/44 and hose it down with oil. Currently 5w20 Mobil 1. I did it with this one and by the time I got to shooting it, all sorts of reddish oil was coming out of it. I shot it to loosen it up but then tore it down and scrubbed out the rust from it. Now it is really nice but I should really scrub it some more. I am going to let it stew for a while in more oil, shoot it again and then whack it with the ultrasonic.

Ok, you got me. I was wondering how you knew the gun had rust in it as I did not remember mentioning that. I scrubbed it out and no big deal but I was thinking "How did he know that????"

Yeah I am a bit rusty myself at times....

Nice revolvers Peter ! I've only got one in my herd, 1931 date to be exact, its a good shooter though. Nice target time, you shoot pretty well. Enjoy.

No I have not considered T-grips yet. I like the challenge of sorting out how to shoot service and magna grips properly. It is just times like this that I need to step back and say maybe T-Grips are not such a bad idea after all.

What I like about the T-grips is that, for me, they greatly improve the feel and control, while keeping the original flavor of the guns. Again, great classic guns! Thanks for posting.
