Bolt action 500S&W rifle...?

How hard would it be to turn a short action (222-308) into a 500 S&W rifle? A new barrel ofcourse and some machining on the bolt head - what else?

I have just bought a Remington 600 in 222 Rem and thought it could be a fitting foundation for a compact big bore rifle.

How to chamber 500SW

I think I would go with a rifle with a CLAW type extracter.

Maybe A Win M70 in a short magmun, bolt face should be easest to machine,

Or a Ruger 77.

The Rem 600, would need the bolt face opened and propably, need to have Sako style extracter in stall, and I would want to measure the diameter of the bolt body against the rim diameter of 500SW.

Other the worrying about money nothing that is not inherently unsafe can not be done, BUT IS ITPRACTCAL?

Ok. Maybe not the ideal rifle. But it could be done on a mauser type action?

What about 223 Rem (have access to unlimited supply of surplus ammo) or 22-250 in a Rem 600?

The bolt face and extractor would be changed.
It would have to be single shot to keep the effort down.
The Rem 600 is worth too much $ to screw up.


I have dozens of 1903 Turks lying around for such projects.
The 500S&W rim diameter is .556"

I have opened Mausers to .532" for 300Win Mag, so it is probably possible.
