Bolt action shotgun

I've still got my dad's old Mossberg 20 gauge bolt action that he bought new back in the 1930's. It was the only shotgun he ever owned and it brought home a lot of grouse and rabbits when I was a kid. It's seen a lot of use but still works perfectly.

I even saw him shoot a couple of doubles with it on grouse. A practiced shooter can get off multiple shots pretty quickly with a bolt action. Here's a video of a guy (not me) shooting one fairly fast:

Funny how the bolt guns that have problems always seem to end up being acquired through some "armful of guns" trade or complicated family deal,,,

El Mariachi, I like the BAS club forum idea. This is my brothers Shop Gun.

After extensive testing, we have found, that the double is only faster for 2 rounds, and the 12Ga shells still work like 12ga shells.;)

Bead Blasted, and Teflon Coated! :D It looked pretty good just bead blasted!
( No, he didn't pay to have it done. Its that kind of shop.)

I'm definitely up for that Team B.A.S. Club, Ruger. I should have all four of my Higgins Model 10's in my hands by the 20th, so I'll take a bunch of glamour shots of them when I get 'em back to my shop. Maybe even try some Bob Guccione style pics of them, you know with the soft-focus vaseline-on-the-lens trick......:D

We spend a lifetime learning how to spend hours getting cosmoline off and out of every nook and cranny and here you wanna go and grease everything up again...

OK!

Took my biggest buck with a Mossberg B/A 12 gauge. If I still had it, it would undoubtedly have racked up quite a string by now.

Darned if I recall, Heeler. The story is up in the floaters,"The Ugliest Shotgun in Howard County".

That Mossberg had a two shot detachable mag and C-Lect choke. That last was removed when the barrel was shortened.

GG almighty you cut the barrel?! With a C-lecter choke? I can't believe you would cut the head off of the perfect shotgun. ;)

GM, let me know how you like shooting your a-bolt. Is it the synthetic stock model?

I'm cleaning up a Mossberg Model 190 in 16 ga for a member of the Sunday School class that I teach. He inherited it from his late grandfather. It has some surface rust and stock dings but is still very serviceable. It has a 2 round detachable box magazine and C-lect choke. Nice gun.

jimmyray, My brothers 16 Mossberg fits great. You know what my favorite part is?
the goofy fingergroove extension on the trigger guard!

My first deer gun was a single shot bolt action in .410. It was accurate enough but the empty alway hung up during ejection. My wife inherited her dad's .410 bolt gun which she gave to her younger brother. I don't remember the manufacturer or model
\of either gun.

Ok, can one of you Rok Starz here educate me on this one? Because earlier I saw where some people use 12's and even 10 gauges for goose....but now Jimmy says that using a .410 on deer works as well?

Sorry, but me very confused.... :D

Red Cent, I have a "Hard Hit Heart" Mauser conversion 12ga also. From my father, who got the gun from his father many years ago. We called it "the cannon" growing up, and I dod not know of the dangers of shooting it until about 20 years ago. Still, kind of interesting. It does work, but I don't want to shoot it now!

He knows he's just cuttin up.'

No Ruger, actually I haven't a clue. I've never fired a shotgun in my life, nor done any hunting.

And I'm olde....

OK, Some birds, turkeys, geese (Giant Canada)are pretty big ( 10ga, 12ga)
Some deer , are really small :) (.410)

I might be dead wrong but I don't think Michigan boys use 410s on they're Deer.
Not the 1s I've seen.

I shot a deer one time that weighed 232, field dressed. old and tough, ol roman nosed ,
farmland buck. should a put him all to jerky.

I used the .410 because it was all I had (and it cost me $15.00). Deer here are getting bigger than in the past. This past season more deer dressing over 200 pounds came from my county (Blount) than ever before. The .410 slug is approx...45 caliber loaded in a 3"-3-1/2" shell. Held to a maximum of 50 yards or so it is quite effective on average sized deer (100-150 lbs). I graduated to a Remington 700ADL in 30.06 when I got the money.

Thats pretty close country, isn't it? I mean woods or swamp? or what. 30-40yds avg shot.
I've only been across one of the top corners of the state.
