Bought a Hornady LnL press and new dimension dies

I'm a long time lurker and a first time poster. It looks like THR has a number of LnL AP owners so I thought I seek your help.

I have my crimping die setup on my 5th station for 9mm. The problem is I can't get the die to crimp my 9mm shell unless I thread the die through the press to "normal" levels.

When a die is threaded to a normal level in 5th station in LnL, the ejection wire gets in the way of the die doing its job. The manual says I should be able to thread it 3 turns or so, and it'll look like it's not much but it'll work. I do not find this to be true.

Is there a detail I'm overlooking or is this a design fault? thanks.

First of all are you sure that you are using a taper crimp die and not a roll crimp die? You only need to slightly taper crimp your case to remove the bell from your expander die and from seating your bullet. I suspect it is working correctly and you do not realize it. Try crimping an empty expanded case and see if your die is set up properly. Remember that the 9mm case headspaces on the case mouth and not on the rim like a revolver round. You should not see much of a crimp. :banghead:

It named "Seating Die" in the manual, it doesn't mention taper or roll, so I'm not sure what I got. There were two seating stems. One with hollowed out end and one with solid end, I'm using the hollowed out end with FMJ.

Crimping does work, without the ejection wire. But with the ejection wire, the die hits the ejection wire before the case goes in deep enough to get any work done.

Manaul reads "When properly adjusted, Hornady's seating die may appear as though it's not threaded far enough into the press...." but when I eye ball this die with my other two dies, it comes down to same level. I suspect if I can "properly adjust" this die, I can use this with my ejection wire.

I had the same issue when using a Lee crimp die in the 5th station. If you are not using a Powder through expander on the powder drop I suggest it, and this would free up your 5th station.

I just modified the ejector wire just enough to not bind up on the die. It touches the die still, but I can not even feel it after tweaking it some.

Globeguy, if your die in Station 5 is one of the 3 dies (namely the combination bullet seating / crimp die) that came in the new dimension set, I don't think it's a taper crimp die. I have the same press as you, and recently fought a minor battle getting my .45ACP rounds to chamber right. My .45ACP New Dimension die sets' combination die has a roll crimp (not what you need with a cartridge like the 9mm or .45ACP that headspaces on the case mouth). I ended up buying a proper dedicated taper crimp die (Hornady so it'd clear the ejector spring) and putting it in station 5. I have the sizer / decapper in station 1, Powder Measure with .451 Powder-thru expander in station 2, hornady powder cop die in station 3, bullet seater (backed out so it doesn't attempt a crimp) in station 4, and the taper crimp die in station 5. All is well now, everything works fine. I'm not sure what the logic Hornady is following with selling a die set for rounds like the .45acp and 9mm without a proper taper crimp die, but ironically they have a space dedicated in the die box for the 4th die... go figure.

Of the hundreds of dies that Hornady makes, they only make 8 taper crimp dies:
38 – 9mm
40 SW – 10mm
400 COR-BON
45 ACP
454 CASULL
460 SW
475 LINEBAUGH
500SW

If your box does not specifically say that it is a taper crimp ( in your case a 38 – 9mm Taper Crimp # 044170), then you have the roll crimp die. Roll crimp dies work fine to apply a taper crimp, as long as they are not set too deep to engage the roll portion of the die.
