I just picked up a new Saiga in 7.62x39 and am looking to get some accessories, but haven't had a whole lot of luck. Below is a pic of the exact model that I picked up:

First thing I need are high-cap mags, and this link was the only one that I could find. It doesn't say on that site that they will fit the Saiga without modification, so I'll call them tomorrow before ordering. If that doesn't work anybody have other sources?

Next I want to get a slight stock extension, as it doesn't fit right in the pit of my shoulder at that length - and tends to slip out towards my bicep and create some nasty bruising. Is that something I should pick up at the local gun store, or are there good offerings online?

Last but not least I want to get a red-dot setup for this - I have other iron sites weapons and have been watering at the mouth thinking of a nice red-dot site. Does anybody have experience with that kind of setup on a Saiga, and do you feel like pointing me in the right direction for a decent setup?

Thanks in advance!

Did your Saiga come stock with those handguards?

The only other stock that will fit an unmodified Saiga is the monte carlo factory stock. Its a little bit longer. I have seen places selling them online for as little as $5.

[Yes, I know it comes up each time]

You should make sure you are 922r compliant when using standard capacity military surplus magazines with your Saiga.

The master molder mags are known to work with little modification.

Visit http://forum.saiga-12.com for more information.

cheap slip on recoil pads can be had for like $5 or so.The plus is the rubber will help prevent slippage, it will ad and inch or 2 in lenght, its cheap, and it can be swapped from gun to gun in seconds if you want to.I have one that I swap between my M44 and 30-06 to help with recoil and slippage.Works great, and I personally dont think they look bad, and with the black furniture on your gun compared to my wook, it would really kinda blend in an not be noticeable looks-wise.

A little off track but for all the Saiga fans...a question.

I know Saiga's are rather well made. I saw on one of the links above a picatinny rail that fits on the combloc scope mount. Saiga has this mount and I hear it is very well done and tight. There's your red dot sight!

So, my question to Saiga fans...how well do Saiga 7.62x39 rifles and carbines digest surplus ammo? Are these things happy with the 7.62x39 you can get in the big sardine cans?

It's an AK receiver, so it should take just about anything.... Wolf, surplus, and all. YMMV

The cheapest ammo I've found so far is golden tiger, it's even cheaper than the spam can surplus that's floating around. I ran through 200rds of the golden tiger without a hitch the same day I bought the rifle, and expect to have the same experience with pretty much any 7.62x39 that I feed through it.

Remember that a Saiga is a true Russian AK receiver and action modified to fit into the silly "sporting purposes" ideal to be sold into the US. It's manufactured by the same plant that produces Russian military arms. That surplus ammo you are talking about is what this gun is designed to fire. Have at it!

Sammy, Master Moulder mags are regular High cap mags.. and they do work, you need a little fiddling on the mag catch... just remember to stay 922r compliant, for the OP setup above, I'd swap a US piston into it and loadup on master moulder mags.. job done!

As far as surplus ammo goes...

My S.223 digested pretty much any .223 I put in it.

The only "surplus" I have used in it would probably be some old HSM reloads.

C'mon folks. Y'all are discussing regular ol' AKM mags. 30 rounds is the standard capacity.

A "high cap" AK mag would be one of those:

These are completely normal (READ "standard capacity") AKM mags:

Enough of the "high cap" mag talk when referring to standard stuff.

Yes, but why would you want to? Receiver cover scope mounts aren't worth what you pay for them. They are comparatively flimsy and will not hold a zero.

The side rail is rock solid and is the preferred method for mounting optics on a Kalashnikov equipped with one.

For the red-dot setup I was looking at this mount since it was cheap and offered picatinny mounting so I won't be limited on what I can mount to it. Along with that mount I was thinking of going with this red dot panoramic scope. I know BEC optics aren't top of the line, but are they going to even be reliable enough to give me an idea of if I really like that kind of setup or not?

I suggest goint to the saiga forum and doing some reading.

There you will find very good information about 922 complinace. If you want to run 30 round mags this is important. You can also see pictures of many modified saigas which may help give you an idea of what you would like to do to yours.

There are some very knowledgable and helpfull people who post there and they can probably answer any question you have. Search the forums there is a lot of info there already.

I have two Saiga's that are are there way to me right now. A 7.62x39 and a .233. I am trying to decide how to modify these ones myself.

what an idiot I am... the front handguards in that pic are indeed different than what I have - can't beleive I missed that...

okay, that makes me feel better, haha.
saiga-12 is a great website. and i think from dinzagarms.com I can get a bolt on front handguard retainer thing and a gas tube and run those AK47/74 style guards instead of the saiga stuff.

If I don't relocate my FCG forward, I may get one of those style buttstocks like you have
