There most certainly is. The AR is a pain in the butt to clean because it "poops where it eats." I'm not a hater. In fact, I own one.

A few things to keep in mind:

1. Read an M16 manual. They're everywhere.

2. Make sure you use an M16 chamber brush to clean the carbon from the locking lugs and chamber. If you don't you will notice your bolt will repeatedly fail to go into battery. The carbon in this area will build up to a point the bolt wont go into battery on it's own and you'll have to resort to pushing the bolt forward or pressing the forward assist.

3. Make sure you keep the 4 rails on the bolt carrier group (BCG) well lubricated. Dry rails can cause the AR to malfunction.

4. The T-handle or charging handle is the Achilles heel of the AR. The charging handle is the weakest part of the rifle and needs to be straight and free from bends. You need to keep it lubricated as well. There are 4 areas that need to be lubricated on the charging handle and you'll see where once you shoot a few hundred rounds through your rifle. You'll see grey or white wear marks that contrast against the black anodizing. A dry charging handle can also cause the AR to malfunction.

5. The bolt assembly has 3 gas rings. The gas rings are readily apparent as they are grey or white and contrast against the black phosphate of the bolt assembly. The gaps between the rings cannot line up. If these gaps line up, it can cause too much gas to escape too early in the cycle. This can result in short-stroking and possibly jamming the rifle. Keeping an eye on this area is simple preventive maintenance.

6. Remove the recoil spring and lubricate the spring. It will decrease wear and reduce the noise the spring will make when the gun recoils.

I am issued the M16A2. The AR needs to be wet with lubrication in order to function. A wet M16 in the middle east is obviously not the best as it attracts dust and sand which can build up and cause the weapon to jam.

A product like Eezox and a light application of grease is ideal. Eezox will dry to the touch and unlike oil will not attract dust and sand. A light coating of grease on the 4 rails of the BCG and 4 areas on the charging handle works wonders in the harsh environment of a desert.

Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun with your rifle.

The Gun Digest Book of The AR-15 by Patrick Sweeney is a very good read and easy on the brain.

I went out to the farm today to try it out and it worked great. I fired 50 rounds of 55 grain FMJ Black Hills. There was a failure to feed and I think it was from the cold.
