My soon to be brother-in-law is looking for a good bolt action breakdown rifle. I've seen many a rifle that breaks down into two main pieces, but not what he's wanting.

He tells me he saw a movie (so it might not even exist eh?) where a female assassin has a briefcase or very small suitcase that contains a rifle broken down into 3 parts (4 if you count the QD scope) and was assembled in seconds.

Any idea what that gun was? Sorry I don't know what movie he's talking about. I've never seen a breakdown rifle that a.) wasn't a single shot break action and b.) broke down into small enough peices to fit into anything close to breifcase size.

I'm thinking this over in my head and just can't imagine a scoped rifle with a barrel that short. No one makes a two piece barrel do they?

I suspect it was an Armalite AR7. A .22 semi-auto that disassembles into separate barrel and reciever that then fits into the plastic butt stock. Very sinister looking, it often appears as a sniper rifle in movies. James Bond used one in one of the 007 films.

I think I know what your talking about, its been awhile, but I can see it being possible if you had a 11.5 inch barrel or so with a detachable buttstock, or if the gun was in a bullpup configuration. I forgot the name of the movie though, although I think stuff like that have been shown in a bunch of movies.

I have seen what you are looking for, be prepaired to spend $$$.
Some tactical bolt action rifles are sold in a break-down setup, but they are rare and expensive (and might be regulated in some states). Generally they have a short barrel @18" or less, you flip a lever on the under side of the stock and the barrel and stock forarm rotate and seperate from the action.

Two piece barrels wont work because of the pressure in the barrel and you would have trouble if it didn't line up perfectly. where the barrel meets the action they don't have to be quite as percise.

check some of the higher end Tact. rifle makers (sig, styer, fn), like I said, what you're looking for will cost $$$

Just as reference for other posters, the movie you're thinking of is "Long Kiss Goodnight." Dunno what rifle it was though. Anyone else wanna take a guess what it was?

What about this one? Its from EDM Arms, is called the Windrunner.

I think I know the movie you are talking about, It is one of two... One where she was on death row, put down, but wasn't really, it was staged and they made he be an assassin. Or it could be that one movie that is something to the effect of "a goodnights longnight kiss or something.

somehow I don't think that a Windrunner will fit in a briefcase, But .50 BMG allways make me smile (just like John Denver and sunshine):D

My thought exactly. Is this real, or Hollyweird?

Two movie take downs bolt guns that I can think of off the top of my head were the rifle Lawrence Harvey in The Manchurian Candidate used to off his stupid stepfather and loathsome mom, and the rifle the bad guy sniper in Dirty Harry used. Neither quite match your description (not being used by a female).

Well, you have movie props on the one hand, real guns on the other.
The real guns tend to be expensive. There are some that will take down into bits no longer than the barrel. It will cost a lot more than the movie ticket.

The lever action Savage 99 was made in a takedown version, and you can still find these at gun shows. It has a separate fore-end and buttstock.

Accuracy of a takedown rifle probably will not be as good as a fixed barrel rifle, and two piece stocks usually lose a bit of accuracy compared to a one piece stock. The accuracy advantage of the bolt action rifle is due to rigidity of the barreled action and the stock; that gives consistency from shot to shot. A takedown rifle will have more play between barrel and action, and the fore-end will apply pressure against the barrel. A bolt action with a one piece stock can be fitted to the action and free floated at the barrel, for greater accuracy.

Is he looking for a practical shooting rifle, or for a gee-whiz gimmick to impress people?

Fella's;

I believe that both Dakota & Sako are currently offering rifles that offer a switch barrel function. In other words, one receiver, multiple barrels. That would also satisfy the take-down terminology I'd think.

However, I doubt that either would fit into a truly small case, small suitcase maybe, but not a lot smaller. Unless the buttstock were to be made a removeable item. Then, put the barrel in on the diagonal & you might get it done. But, I also believe that the accuracy would suffer.
