I bought a new Leupold Vari-X III, 2.5-8 scope about 2 months ago. It has never been dropped. I fired 12 rounds of .30-06 Sprg through it, then had to remove it to return my Super Grade for replacement. With my new rifle in-hand, I went to remount the scope yesterday. As I picked up the scope, I noticed it made a dull "thud" sound and I could feel it "rattle".

At first, I thought the rings were loose, and so I checked them. As I rattled the scope, it sounds like it has a marble inside of it. It only does this at the rear of the scope. The noise is without question internal. The picture is clear, and the power magnification functions.

My question, what the heck could possibly have gone wrong?! The erector?!

I will return it to Leupold Monday.

Geno,

If it is mechanical, it can break, you don't hear that on many Leupold products and I'm sure they will take care of the problem.

Man, you are on a roll of bad luck. It has to change soon, I suggest you go out right now and buy a lottery ticket.

Leupold should take care of you right away.

If you fired 12 rounds of .30-06 Sprg through it that could cause problems. :neener: I couldn't help it.

I would think Leupold will send a invoice back with it explaining what they did/replaced. Maybe some guy on the assembly line dropped in something extra?

I bought my lottery ticket yesterday. :D Yeah, I have no doubt Leupold will fix or replace it and will do so promptly. I have owned a few Vari-X IIIs, and have never broken one. In fact, I have only ever broken one scope, I believe a Tasco. It's kind of a shame; I really like these 2.5-8s. Hopefully they will have a few around.

Pretty cool warranty, isn't it? I wasn't aware of, or didn't recollect, that it applies even if not the original owner. That puts Leupold's warranty right up there with T/C Arms' warranty. Thanks for that post W.E.G.! :D

Broken Leupold

Hi there,
I don't know where you bought this Leupold and I say that because Leupold has been receiving a lot of fake scopes that are not Leupold's. If you go to their web site they will tell you how to identify the knock offs. I've been shooting with Leupold and have never had one fail me and I shoot big bore magnums rifles with some of their low end optics. Many of these knock off scopes are being offered online and at gun shows and if an individual doesn't know what to look for they just might wind up with something worthy of the trash can. Leupold optics don't have decals of the logo but instead have the logo laser engraved on the scope, not the elevation or windage caps or any where else for that matter. The gold ring as well is not a removable piece or decal but is actually an integrated part of the tube. There are several other identifying factors and if your still not sure send it in to Leupold, but be ready to pay the shipping if it is a knock off.

No, it's a genuine Leupold. I too have had several Leupold scopes and have never broken one. I've used them on .300 Wea Mags, .338 Win Mags and .375 H&H Mags. Never an issue of any form. I got it shipped off today. They'll take care of the matter.

Update:

I called Leupold's Technical Support department and the scope arrived yesterday. The employee was very professional and advised me that the scope would be logged into the system today, and the estimated turn-around time would be about two weeks.
