I have a Vari X (not a I,II, or III) 3X9 scope that dates back to the 60's and parts of it have turned a plum color. Does anyone have any warranty experience with Leupold regarding this or know what Leupold's position on this is? I've talked with them over the phone and all they will say is send it in and we'll take a look at it. They wouldn't acknowledge that this is a common problem that everyone seems to know about but them. I just hate to waste my time if they won't do anything about it.

I asked if anyone else has had experience with Leupold with regard to this issue. They say they have a lifetime warranty, but I would like to know if they've ever replaced their scope because of it turning plum colored. To me it is clearly a defect.

Probably is a defect in the finish but the only way to find out if Leupold will make it good is to send it in. It will be up to Leupold to determine if it is warrantable.

Some people look for that in a vintage Leupold scope particularly for a ruger m77 that's started to "plum" too. I doubt leupold would replace it but I do bet you could sell it and make enough $$$ to buy a New leupold VXI a scope that's be optically superior in every way to your vintage optic

Send it in I bet they will replace refinnish or something.I have sent 2 scopes to them and been very pleased.I bought a 6x 14 for a song because the guy couldnt get it to adjust down far enough[front of scope was setting on rear sight]. He used a large screw driver and wrung the adjustment screw out. Sent it to leupold they fixed and shipped it back for free. I know they had to wonder how that happened.
